"This is one of the most alarming situations happening now in the beef supply industry. 1.) cattle producers are being incentivized with incredibly high market rates to sell their cattle to auction. Many will likely choose to send their breeding stock as well because they have no guarantee the price will ever justify not doing so now. 2.) political social and economic pressures have assured farmers that they are often the least respected trades in the country. I predict farmers will soon be accused of being selfish for selling their cattle at auction versus keeping them to expand herds in the"

"Youre going to have to change your buying habits. We have people saying they are buying meat from us and able to split it into multiple meals. We do not sell cheap meat - we cant. The cost of the chicks the feed the processing alone is multiples more than what a chicken in the grocery store costs. But what were finding is that the quantity of meat and the nutrient density alone of real meat raised on small farms is likely multitudes more than what is being purchased in groceries. A restaurant contracting with us is even figuring this out - they will buy a chicken breast from us split it into"

"Look at how spectacular these animals instincts are - right here this is not confinement farming - this is building resilient farms nationwide. We want to be a teaching farm - multiple at scale enterprises - helping bring back and restore the local farm and the American homestead. It is possible and we are pushing forward to make this happen. From wool to meat to garlic and to the new product lines Im about to announce. "The reviews are so clear at this point - we might be into something really special. And this goes for every product we are producing from our farm - in the next [--] days our pork will be available and a surprise product too. We understand quality flavor nutrition - we didnt come from farming but we know what good end results are and we are committed to making sure everything we sell is spectacular. This might sound pompous I dont mean it to be - its one standard - what I want to feed my children is what we sell to others. Simple. This year another new product line non meat hits the market"

"This is a really good question. Why do farms not list a clear price per pound on meat and instead list a range It's largely due to inventory management. In a grocery store you can inspect each package and select which package you want to purchase. So they can place a price per pound on the package and you choose accordingly. When you purchase online we show the range (for example - Whole Chicken 3-4lbs). This is because we might have [---] Whole Chickens in stock that weight between that range. When you pay online and want a chicken that is [----] Pounds and not [----] Pounds that would require us"

"The manure issue is insane. Ive been talking about this for sometime. Organic is not a product. It is a process. And that process has many holes that can erode your trust in the entire system. The manure issue as a fertilizer is foul. There is even an argument to be made that synthetic fertilizer is healthier in some nuanced situations than organic fertilizers if its antibiotic chemical laden manure - but because its manure some reason its allowable. We have been exploring organic certification as we are far beyond the expectations of organic on our farm. And yet Im so troubled by the"

"This is when piglets switch from nursing to solid food - and it happens quicker than most people realize if you allow it to be done naturally. They have innate instincts - and they also learn from mom. Mom is eating so they become curious. First they smell then they taste and soon enough they want the feed too We do this without a creep feed system and allow it to happen naturally to decrease stress and increase natural curiosity - inspired by their own instincts. Then we manage the instincts without squashing them which allows for better behavior on pasture"

"Did you know cattle enjoy eating leaves Like many other animals - if they are seeking certain nutrients they might find them in leaves bark or more. In winter months as forage is low cattle may prefer to nibble on a trees leaves. One strategy for cleaning up leaf debris from felling trees is to drop the trees in a paddock with cattle. "Number one recommendation for gardens this year - work backwards. Begin with what is in your pantry that you eat at least once per week. "Im not looking forward to the future in fear. Im building a foundation that will provide for my family regardless of what is to come. All with a clear recognition of our own mortality. I think its very important you build resilience into your life - specifically around growing your own food or working with neighbors and local farmers to do so. This applies also to energy and systems that work without external inputs. You might never need them - but just like paying off a mortgage and not being beholden to debts or another man - choosing to not be indebted is a pretty good way to live happily."

Its frankly quite incredible she survived the cold we experienced. The other piglets are absolutely thriving - as in they are well on their way to independence in a way we havent yet seen from any litter of pigs here. "The key phrase that might trump all others for agriculture in the coming years. Family-Scale. Not regenerative not small-scale but family-scale. Bring back the farms to individuals and families that firstly supports the needs of the family and overflows to the needs of the community. Where local cuisine is derived from local grown food. Restrictions in options prompt creativity in cooking. Where community and neighbors gather to support one another in times of need. Family-scale is the key phrase. "I dont think many people are aware of- the state of agriculture in the US is in trouble. And its really bad - Im hopeful but the solution right now likely revolves around hyper critical local solutions as it seems consolidation continues to progress. First priority is reduction of all barriers preventing neighbors from selling to neighbors. There should be no legislation preventing people from growing food and being unable to sell or barter it with their neighbors and community - period"

"We produce better quality meat because we work with the animals to open nutritional opportunities through fermentation methods and natural rearing. We dont wean animals on industry standards because industry standards are for economic productivity of meat despite best case scenarios for the animals. Better life for animals equates to better nutritional content of meat. Thats my theory. And if Im incorrect or the nutritional results are minimal at least I feel better stating to customers that we treat our animals well. Including not just the animals destined for meat but for the entirety of"

"I had a visitor today who seemingly was disappointed in my egg pricing. You can find $3-$5 eggs per dozen at grocery stores. Styrofoam cartons caged chickens or the one company that really bothers me but it is what it is. I wont name them. Our chickens are fed a diet of grains from a mill that I now have in my possession a certificate of their good standing with organic standards. This means we do pay them more for that grain that would be found in a farm that sources gmo grains. I charge $6/dozen and have since we started here because my costs have not changed for the grain inputs. Despite"

"We are building this pork enterprise as one of our three primary enterprises in [----]. We received an offer in early [----] or late [----] from another farm to buy [--] finished pigs per week. "Baby chicks being taught to forage by a mother hen. This is one true method of building a sustainable homesteading system. You only get this natural instinct to show if you allow some degree of natural rearing to occur. The eggs hatched beneath the hen who then immediately gets to teaching them how to survive. And this doesnt follow any of the guidance for raising chickens its down into the 40s at night and winter is coming. These chicks have a good chance of survival with the mother hen nearby"

"Lot of questions about soaking garlic before planting. None of this is necessary but definitely offers benefits. We sanitize new garlic seed first in isopropyl alcohol to ensure we dont transfer soil borne diseases to the soil. Garlic is planted in different areas each year to also help minimize pest damage and promote soil health. We then rinse that off and soak the garlic cloves in fish emulsion. We do this to provide beneficial microbes and general biology to the cloves. This is also is hydrating and acts as a first watering to promote quick and strong root development before the weather"

For example - If I had a certain candy bar as a child that candy bar now tastes like a chemical to me. It's not even appealing anymore.

"The manure issue is insane. Ive been talking about this for sometime. Organic is not a product. It is a process. And that process has many holes that can erode your trust in the entire system. The manure issue as a fertilizer is foul.

Start with a small beehive a few chickens maybe just a windowsill garden - plant something today youll see how quickly responsibility evacuates the anxieties of modernity. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1910323424322257186 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1910323424322257186"

But you have to also understand that for people who spend their time stewarding the land daily interacting with livestock and generally paying attention to the animals needs - they might actually find my presence comforting and one of security. Notice the below video. She burrows towards me. And Im not suggesting being reckless. Never put your hands near their mouths. Children are not allowed near most of the male animals. And its really bad - Im hopeful but the solution right now likely revolves around hyper critical local solutions as it seems consolidation continues to progress. "We produce better quality meat because we work with the animals to open nutritional opportunities through fermentation methods and natural rearing. We dont wean animals on industry standards because industry standards are for economic productivity of meat despite best case scenarios for the animals. "One of the divisive aspects of the black walnut discussion is the simple reality that it evades significant monetization. "Baby chicks being taught to forage by a mother hen. This is one true method of building a sustainable homesteading system. You only get this natural instinct to show if you allow some degree of natural rearing to occur. The eggs hatched beneath the hen who then immediately gets to teaching them how to survive.
