"A healthy mind can not only think independently but can also see merit in opposing viewpoints when justified. A skyscraper looks huge from the street but the same building looks small from a birds-eye view. Same building. Different conclusions. The difference is vantage point and relative comparison. To all the $UBER bears try to step out of your $TSLA or Waymo bubble. There are obviously no certainties especially in the stock market outcomes are always probabilistic. But reasonably speaking $UBER has too much momentum and too many levers at this point to be easily disrupted. The only way out"

"$UBER Walmart $WMT hit $1T in market cap yesterday. It reminded me of the dark days when it was expected to completely disappear. Not too long ago the din online was so loud that all reasonable voices were subsumed. Amazon $AMZN was inevitable. Physical retail was dead. Walmart was finished. That bear narrative looked obvious and felt inevitable. And then it just wasnt. Reality turned out to be more nuanced. Competition wasnt winner-take-all. Execution scale logistics and adaptation still mattered. Walmart didnt need to win the internet to win. It just needed to keep compounding. It did two"

"$UBER Brilliant life advice from Dara on TBPN yesterday. Also loved his articulation on what he called the utilization bonus for AVs on Ubers network. AVs distributed via a 3P platform like $UBER get meaningfully higher utilization vs 1P-only models. $UBER is already seeing this in the trip data coming out from Waymo rollouts in Austin & Atlanta on its network. Same asset (i.e. capex $$) sweats more with $UBER leads to higher profit $$ leads to higher ROI for the tech owners. "Sufficient ROI on capex to standup a fleet of AVs is the issue. No one wants to own cars on their balance sheet. Economics for AV-only fleets are just poor today. Ride-hail demand is highly variable and you need flexible supply to make economics work unless per car cost is orders of magnitude lower (i.e. under a buck per mile) which will take time. Meanwhile $UBER gives you immediate distribution. Its the best bet for any AV tech developer to maximize revenue and therefore economics. This is also the reason why Waymo has not significantly ramped up their fleet size in SF having been operating"

"Agree with your point re power laws. $UBER s mobility business gets somewhat disrupted in a world where supply of AVs get restricted and it is unable to integrate AV supply into its overall supply mix especially in its key city markets. "Yea but lack of disclosure is not grounds to state that their FCF is overstated by up to 50%. Its a great sounding sensational headline but doesnt anchor to facts either. Setting the disclosure concern aside if the future cash payouts on todays claims really turn out to be higher relative to the estimated reserves booked today their future FCF will reflect that. "You mean combined loss ratio (claims + opex) not just loss ratio (claims only) which is much lower. Yea I know that figure ticked up and then came down. there are differences though between $UBER and $TSLA. Tesla Insurance struggled because their cars are super expensive to repair (driving loss ratios above 100%). Their claims are often deemed total loss as repair cost is exorbitant. "$UBER s insurance results look unusual if you view them like a traditional insurer but again that take is misguided. Farmers isnt actually taking the underwriting risk. It fronts the policy for regulatory reasons (in many states you need a licensed insurer to first write the policy) then cedes almost all of the risk back to Ubers captive (Aleka). Uber essentially self-insures and Farmers earns a fee for administering claims and issuing the paper. So the loss ratios you see arent evidence that Farmers is getting destroyed they show Uber absorbing the risk by design. The spike in loss ratios"

You sell more you hire more you add more inputs more support more overhead. Revenue goes up but so does the cost base. Sometimes at the same rate. Sometimes faster. Thats not sustainable. Scaling is different. Scaling is when the rate of change between revenue and costs starts to diverge. Revenue grows faster than costs. The core system doesnt need to expand one-for-one with demand. "$UBER $TSLA $GOOG (i.e. Waymo) Really good piece of writing here. This is one of the more useful framings Ive seen on the whole autonomous rideshare debate. Move from narratives to a clear bottoms-up unit economics model where the assumptions are explicit and stress-testable. It breaks the problem into real underlying levers and lets you compare how the economics change under 1P vs 3P structures rather than arguing past each other. Whether youre optimistic or skeptical this is a good common language for the discussion. If you disagree you can point out which assumption breaks and why. Numbers"

"$UBER Some thoughts on mobility trip insurance and the reserves behind it. Theres been a lot of debate on X about this lately. So I wrote up some thoughts here. My basic view is that trip insurance is one of $UBER s underappreciated advantages and over time will prove to be a tailwind and a real and sustainable competitive edge. AVs will be net incremental to human driven trips not a replacement. Even when AVs reach scale and are meaningfully safer the steady end state for ridehail is still a hybrid network. One thing that especially stood out to me was a lesson on strategy that I still keep front and center as I evaluate businesses. It came from Prof. @NicSiggelkow Strategy is more than positioning. Strategy is a holistic set of actions and decisions that reinforce one another. Over time they compound into real and often insurmountable barriers. It is not a slogan. It is not a feature. New management is leaning into the strategy with Opendoor [---] aiming to increase transaction velocity and removing fixed costs out of the base to improve operational efficiencies. My view: This is a healthy sign. Sell-side is starting to revise estimates as signs of execution improvement surface. If Kaz can drive higher transaction velocity and show a viable path to operating leverage"

Numbers"

"@davisliuSF @realroseceline Thanks for revisiting this I picked up on this color on the call too. Quite sure this will play out exactly like $GOOG and in hindsight will look so obvious"

"Some of the brightest minds had to eat humble pie on their bearish $GOOG calls. Respect for Josh for seeing through the noise and believing in Googles ability to pull it together and compete and execute. $UBER is another example of this same dynamic playing out right before eyes https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2020221403321278929 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2020221403321278929"

Humans and machines operating side by side. In that world the winning strategy is not"

"Some thoughts on business strategy I learned a bunch of things in business school. It is not something you copy in a year. United Airlines $UAL once thought it could compete with Southwest Airlines $LUV by"

"The point is -- This wasnt an either-or outcome. Both the incumbent and the disruptor did well. The market proved to be large enough to support multiple winners which is how ride hail will play out"
