"GUJARATI PEOPLE AND ZANZIBAR AFRICA: Gujarat had close relations with Zanzibar for centuries. Kutchi Bhatia and Khoja traders played a major role in the Zanzibar economy in the 19th century. In the mid-19th century Zanzibar ruler Muscat (now Oman) Sultan Sayyid Said encouraged Gujarati & especially Kutchi Bhatias to settle in Zanzibar. In XX century Bhatia Jeram Shivji was one of the biggest slave traders in the world at Zanzibar. When slavery was abolished he freed stock of 10000 slaves and gave them some days' expenses each.
