"2/12 The first place to start of course would be not to hand over our sovereign bases to client states of foreign powers. Unfortunately it is likely this deal will go ahead and reversing it will become harder if India China and others are able to entrench themselves"

"3/12 However all is not quite lost on that front. It will still be (just) possible for Reform to reverse it when they come to power. Fortunately we will still have possession of our military infrastructure on the islands and Mauritius has no armed forces to speak of"

"@bnzchr Wasn't the State only 1/10 of GDP then So Imperial defence would be c.5% of GDP which is what it was anyway post empire right up until the end of the Cold War. Seems comparatively cheap given we spend X% GDP on non-pension non NHS welfare today"

"@GeoffreySaucer @emergenteffects In terms of why the US reaction in the 1950s was stronger than GB I agree that was a failure of the British right but again would say that was due to the demoralisation cause by the two wars more than migration. GB has become less enterprising but its because of the c20 not c19"

"@GeoffreySaucer @emergenteffects Thats fair although Im surprised to hear most Americans are descended from the 17th century settlers given there were only 2million people in 1800 included slaves"

"1776 was a broad based War of Independence more than a revolution in the modern sense so contained both conservative liberal and even progressive elements. Similar to how the SNP in Scotland has both a RW (Forbes) and a LW (Sturgeon). It cant be painted as LW or RW imho"

"Its true that sympathetic sentiment within Britain would have been more recognisably LW although even then it included men like Burke who werent radicals even for the 1770s. But that doesnt really tell us anything; Gays for Palestine doesnt make Hamas LGBT for instance"

"@GeoffreySaucer @emergenteffects Even if we accept that the early settlers were marginally more adventurous; it still seems a stretch to say that had much of an effect on Europe given that GB for instance was still producing an outsize share of entrepreneurs inventors adventurers etc well into the c20"
