"This debate about changing the VRC Derby distance from 2500m to 2000m comes up every year and its nonsense. I agree wholeheartedly with @GaiWaterhouse1 on this. Why tamper with history The VRC Derby is the OLDEST CLASSIC HORSE RACE IN AUSTRALIA. First run in 1855 predating even the Melbourne Cup which was first run in 1861. If you want to run your 3yo over 2000m in the Spring at the top level you can already run it in the G1 Spring Champion Stakes or the G1 Cox Plate or the G1 Champions Stakes. Why on earth would you change the distance of the time honoured VRC Derby as well Complete garbage"
