"So many people asked how I stay warm in the winter. Ive been working outside every winter for the past [--] winters. The key is layers - and if theres wind something on the outside to break the wind. This video was taken this morning and it was [---] C (-13F). I worked without a break for [--] hours in those temps and was warm. Heres what I was wearing: Underwear - Truewerk Junkease Werkbrief Pants - Truewerk T4 Werkbib - MUCH better than your traditional canvas insulated overalls which I wore for most of my career. These are so much lighter the fabric is stretchy AND there are built in knee pads."

"By the looks and sounds of the blade moving youd expect a lot of vibration to be transferred to your hand as you use the tool. Makita has come out with some sort of magic to cancel out the vibrations. You cant even see ANY ripples in my Americano. This simply blew my mind I have a multi tool and when Im using it you can definitely feel it vibrating up your arm. I saw this Makita multi tool a few days ago at Atlas Tools grand opening. "This video shows an inside and an outside corner on the flashing detail. Once you get the hang of it its fairly straightforward. Depending on the shape of the drip cap you can do outside corners in once piece as well. I typically one piece the outside corner only when the drip edge comes down [--] or itll look funny. Note- thats is the existing Tyvek from the concrete stair install I overlap my Tyvek over the flashing. And another note the overhead porch extends [--] past this door 👍 I hope this video helps. "This is something Ive shown before - using a snap lock punch to create a locking flap that snaps into the gable trim. I realize many people in other regions have never seen gable trim before and are used to a regular rake drip edge. The flap allows it to lock into the gable trim while still allowing the fascia to move freely. I use stainless steel fascia nails for the bottom and I dont predrill them unless its a dark colour. The bends in the fascia give it enough rigidity so that it doesnt oil can. Ive had the @malcoproductssbc snap lock punch for my entire career. Theres a link in my bio"

"I got this Spring Tool when I was at the International Builders show in Vegas earlier this year. This is the first time Ive used it. My friend gave me a metal cage for my bike which needed to be retrofitted (a few mounting holes were required to be drilled). Normally Id use a traditional center punch with a hammer or drill a small pilot hole. This was a much slicker and easier way to do it. Bought singly they are very cheap or you can get a whole set with different tools like a nail starter mini chisel a nail set and a center punch. Theyre available on Amazon (theres a link in my bio). "Ive always liked knives. Ive purchased a few knives in the past couple of years just because I like them. Do I need another knife No. This Kinetic Customs knives is one of the most satisfying knives if you are a fidgeter like myself. "I saw this Makita Maktrak system for the first time at the World of Concrete show last month in Vegas. This may be a system you could consider if youre in the market for portable tool storage. The main feature I like is the ability to load it into a truck or van easily by yourself. Its easy to unclick the upper storage units if its too heavy to load it all in one shot. This is the actual comment conversation on a video I posted yesterday: It started out as a follower asking how to prevent the siding from blowing out using a snap lock punch in the cold Me: for snap lock heat on the spot you want to snap lock first (your breath works friction works as in rubbing it quickly Ive also used a heat gun in the past) Commenter this morning: unfortunately friction or your breath does not work on thatcome"

"Though Ive shown other methods I use for last rows the snap lock punch is the recommended way of the vinyl siding institute. The utility trim should go inside a J-channel so its unseen and can be shimmed accordingly depending on where the rip cut of the siding lands. The snap lock punch is not ideal for winter installation conditions. This video was recorded well above freezing temps but it will still break the tab if you dont pre-warm it. On very cold days the tabs can just snap off while clicking it into the utility trim as well. I hope the pre-warming tip helps if youre a DIYer and have"

As you can see this is used in broad daylight and youre still able to see the the red dot through the phone. "This video shows the installation of the collapsable legs for the Vanmark Brake. Its from Innovatools and their youtube instructions were very easy to follow. This is a great solution if youre moving your brake around constantly. They have it for Tapco brakes as well. Once collapsed its easy to move around like a wheel barrow. "Ive shown the disposable version of this safety knife before (Olfa SK-15). Ive gotten so used to using it for cutting Tyvek that Ive decided to use this version (SK-16) with replaceable blades consistently now cause IT CUTS LIKE BUTTER 👌. It is seriously night and day difference using this safety knife over a regular utility knife for cutting Tyvek. One advantage of a safety knife is that you dont have to cut against a surface. Sometimes you only want to cut through one layer of Tyvek to slip flashing under and this is the perfect solution. If you havent seen a knife like this I trust that"

"This is how I clad a column in my without any fasteners showing. Here is a quick video showing the general idea. I came up with this on my own through trial and error and first did it on my own house [--] years ago. Its fairly simple but a bit tricky to figure out the bends on the brake (Ill make a video on that sometime). The corner pieces Im spreading out a little bit as I accidentally over bent them in the shop. Having it spread out keeps pressure so it cant come out on its own. Its actually really difficult to try to get the corner pieces off once theyre snapped in place. Also that right"

"There was someone wondering if my cutting table set up is suitable for vinyl siding as well as Ive only shown it cutting aluminum soffit before. Yes it works well with the regular [--] tooth framing blade cutting backwards. I dont flip the blade backwards like most people so that I dont have to keep flipping the blade when switching from cutting wood to soffit or vinyl. "Whenever I switch to any new tool belt or tool setup Ill always force myself to get proficient at grabbing and putting away all tools without looking down. This will save time over the long haul and save a lot of looking down. It can be frustrating at times but once the muscle memory kicks in its so worth it and so satisfying. "Ive shown a few different ways I cut out openings like this in siding before. This yet another way. This method requires no marking and no tape measure. Normally I would nail that right half of the siding piece first to make sure it doesnt come unclicked but you can see I ran out of nails. This is a quick easy and accurate way to cut out a plug hole. "If I have many of the same pieces to bend Ive found it quicker to batch each process. In this case Ill break down the coil into all of the same width pieces then move on to bending all of them. I had over [--] of the same pieces to bend in this instance so once it was slit to the the width desired I put on the measuring gauge and went to town bending all of it. "Ive shown how I like to connect corner posts together before - this video shows it again and I know there are a few different other ways. "Dont ask me for plans or a video on how I made the ladder racks as I made these many years ago before I was even on Instagram. My only regret - that I didnt paint them or use galvanized gas line and fittings so now theyre rusty. Oh well. They still work. Many installers stack all their equipment on top of the trailer. Imagine not having to extend the knife blade every single time you pull it out. I leave it out and the thumb screw locked and its ready to used as soon as I pull it out. The sheath makes it easy as I dont have to push the knife into a sleeve rather just drop it in also saving split seconds. "It was a blast attending the International Builders Show in Las Vegas this past week. The parts of the show that interested me the most was of course all things related to my industry - siding. "Whenever I can cut on the spot I will. Its more accurate and it saves time. I installed the gable fascia first and left everything long. Note - its very difficult to film and cut at the same time without the use of the other hand 😂. Imagine how much cleaner the cut is if both hands were used. I do aim for it to be a bit short so that it has some room to expand into the gutter. If you cut it flush then when it expands into the getter it can buckle the material. Normally if I wasnt filming with the other hand then I would make the second cut coming from the other side so the the edge of the"

"This was another cool product that I saw at the International Builders Show in Vegas. The company DoorSaver gave a sample of these out. Theyve been around for a long time yet I didnt know about it. As you can see my pantry door needed one of these from the beginning. Our guest bedroom door has a hole in it from the traditional style door stops due to family members goofing around and exerted too much pressure on the door stop. The beauty of this design is that all the any pressure is metal on metal as opposed to against trim or hollow doors. Also these look way better than your traditional"

"I used to do this stepped frieze board detail quite often as architects would like to draw in this detail into the building plans. It looks good and it keeps the aluminum rigid. One thing I really like about this detail is you only need one measurement (the space between the 1st step and the soffit channel) which is easily taken care of with a scrap piece of aluminum as a jig. The rest of the bends you can use the brake as the jig making every single piece very consistent. I used zero markings or jigs for this video since I was only using a scrap piece to show the bends. "Installing a corner post is much like installing vinyl board and batten siding. It has to hang from the top nail and have room to expand down. Many dont know that youre supposed to leave 1/4 of space under the soffit as well. Hooking my foot on a ladder isnt best practice but I do it often out of laziness. Kinda like drywallers often walking around on buckets - you just get used to it. I know it would have taken me seconds to come down and move the sawhorse into a better spot 🤷🏻♂. If a [--] corner wont reach to the gable angle then Ill do that. But when I get manage a corner all the way up Id rather that as I think it looks a bit cleaner. With the j-channel method the vertical line gets jagged which I think draws your eye to the unevenness more. "A couple of people asked after watching my last video how to do a return if this crown moulding profile were to be installed. This is the process - first make a template or jig for the mitre cuts then keep that jig for the entire job. Theres also the option to make small even notches on the outside curve and once installed hammer it around the corner to follow the curve. Practice with square boxes once you get the concept of inside and outside corners then it should all be similar just curved cuts"

"Sometimes efficiency is counterintuitive. I decided to drop that long piece I just cut and come back to it later instead of putting the cut-off piece down installing the long piece then going back to install the short piece. Little things you do make a difference in overall efficiency of a job. The idea is to get tasks done in as little motions as possible so that youll exert the least amount of effort to get the job done well. This is why many bosses say dont go to the truck or trailer empty handed grab some garbage on the way to the trailer if you need a tool and dispose of it on the way"

"This is how I take down my scaffolding system. As you can see lowering the poles solo can be controlled and safe. I even lowered the first one with an insert at the top making it top heavy. After owning many trailers of different lengths and heights I have settled to like low trailers to make loading and unloading equipment much easier. I dont often need to walk into my trailer except to sweep/blow it out or to grab fasteners so ducking for those tasks is worth it to make access to the equipment up too easier. I used to hate set up and take down but now I dont mind it. Even without rushing"

"This is quick video on how the pump jack scaffolding works. There is a brake release where you hold it down with your foot and you can crank them down. I started siding with ladders and ladder jacks [--] years ago then upgraded to a wooden pump jack system then shortly after to aluminum pump jacks. Without them I wouldnt work by myself. As you can see the guardrail/workbench holds all of the material needed for the entire wall saving any up & down trips to grab materials and gives me a workbench for ease of work. "People have asked if I use a laser level - the answer is no. Ive never owned one and I dont know how. I dont believe a house should necessarily be sided level rather parallel to the house. So I always start the siding parallel to the house - in this case Im measuring the starter strip to the top of the rim board (floor). The reason for this is if a house had perfectly level siding on it but the house itself wasnt level the siding would look like junk as there would be a wedged shaped row at the soffit. "I switched out my winter tires to my summer tires today. Too soon We get snow typically into May so well see if I did it too soon. Ive been switching out my tires by myself for years even before I had any cordless tools. I just did it old school by hand with a socket wrench. This avoids scheduling appointments at the tire shop and waiting in a waiting room. With cordless tools the tire changes go quickly. One main thing I learned years ago is to put anti seize on the aluminum rims. This prevents the dissimilar metals from reacting with each other and seizing together. Once youve experience"

"Heres a snapshot of a quick and easy soffit repair. If the fascia is installed using trim nails then I usually use a pair of junker aviation snips to cut the nail because stainless steel nails tend to damage the cutting edge of snips. "This footage is from when I replaced my roof last summer. This is another ladder safety device meant to hold the ladder against the gutter so it doesnt slide or come away from the gutter. "If I wasnt in the trades and only had just ONE ladder for household tasks I would choose a combination ladder. Theyve come a long way over the years. The downside is that theyre all pretty heavy but the versatility is worth it if you only had one ladder. "The little details matter. Clipping the corners and spreading the edges of the soffit makes installation easier especially in a renovation like this one where the fascia is already installed. The pinched corners and edges often are the pain points went you hand cut it making it difficult to get the tongue into the groove. "Ive been using these Malco Turboshears for a few years. I hand cut most of the siding for most of my career but these definitely save the hands from overuse/tendonitis. I put a larger hook on the drill and can hook it on my cut station on the pump jacks up in the air. This world is built for right handed people. I did this entire project left-handed which of course took much more time. If I were cutting it with my right hand then I wouldnt have had to mark all of the pieces. You can simply hold the first cut piece and use it as a jig while cutting with your right hand. But alas I like"

"I hesitate to post on this due to my conflict of interest. Many of you know I have a patent on a Siding Adapter - Many have asked is this new Milwaukee nailer an infringement I will not comment on that due to differing opinions and choose not to open that can of worms. My goal when I invented my adapter was to make things easier for myself and to benefit the industry as a whole not to make any money from it. My goal has been accomplished and I do feel Ive made a huge difference in this industry. Ill list the pros and cons setting my biases aside. You probably want to know the comparison"

"I had a chance to do a bit of teaching on the installation of LPs Expert Finish Siding last week. Their facility in NY State is top notch. This video clip shows one of my preferred methods working alone even if I didnt have Gecko Gauges. They are re-using their display over and over which is why ring shanked fasteners arent being used. I like the shiplap joints as opposed to the traditional 3/16 gap and flashing installed behind as shown in the row below. "When I used to train new siding installers I would advise them to take out their tape measure as little as possible. This results in higher efficiency less mistakes and greater ease of work. The fewer steps any process takes usually results in a better end product as each minute mistake can get compounded over the number of steps. Try to reduce the number of steps in anything that you do. I transfer this concept to my new hobby (bouldering) as well the less number of moves I make means I will have used less energy to get to the top. I encourage you to think about this in everything you do in"

"We all know that Milwaukee has a cordless roofing nailer with a siding tip now. There are a couple of cons of the nailer one being that it is 3/4 lb heavier than the DeWalt and the other being that their siding tip isnt quite long enough for many brands of siding to engage the nailing slots and if it does engage you have to angle the nailer for the tips to reach. You also cant use it upside down on siding due to the tip design. Using it upside down is handy in situations where youre nailing a row above a deck or roofline when the body of the nailer gets in the way its handy to turn the nailer"

"There are many ways to terminate the soffit at the end of a run. Sometimes I cut it and bend it up a bit. Sometimes I cut it off and put the scrap cut off under to space it out so it doesnt have a void and get pushed in. "A few days ago I showed a couple of different ways to cut downspouts. As you know there are always many different ways to get a task done - its our job to try different ways and figure out the best way for each circumstance. I explained that I rarely do downspouts and if I do its often a one-off repair for a homeowner so Im never mass cutting downspouts. I use snips generally because thats what I carry on me. Ive never had a hack saw in my work van or trailer as I consider it a tool to leave at home thats why Ive never tried it. This is my first time trying with a hack saw and I gave up I can"

"I know you cut through the whole box of soffit. Good for you I dont because I generally dont go through a whole box of soffit due to the building codes here requiring both vented and non vented soffit so Im frequently mixing and matching. I cut a few sheets at a time as the soffits arent always even and also to manage waste. This soffit cutting table is close to a decade old - made from scrap wood pulled out of the dumpster. Ive had many requests for a video showing how I made it but I made it a few years before I was even on social media. Im considering making another one this summer just to"

"3 years ago I replaced every single window in my home. I had never installed a window before this but decided to attempt it - mainly because I didnt want retrofit/renovation style windows without nailing flanges. I couldnt find a window company that would be willing to take all the siding/trim off install the window flash it and re-install the siding. Though it probably took me 5x longer I was so glad I did it. I was able to inspect the sheathing to make sure it was dry with no rot. I was also able to add sill flashing and insulate it better than what it was before. I enjoy learning new"

"Did you know that we have the only vinyl siding adapter in the world that can be used for J-channel and outside corner posts Some installers prefer J-channel to be nailed tight others prefer it loose. "This is how the Euroshield Vermont Slate starter works. I snap a line so the starter will overhang the drip edge by 3/4. I personally always check the line to the sheeting lines as those lines should get you square to the house. There are circles that you can see in the video indicating where to nail. A tab will space them apart appropriately. Then the shingle will lock into a groove on the starter. Its a straightforward installation process which I like. "The Euroshield hip/ridge cap was simple to install. Many might wonder Brad nails right through the roof This is how Euroshield instructs to install it. The brads are to hold the cap down at the front edge until the Solar Seal cures glueing that front edge down. The president of Euroshield herself shows this technique in one of their instructional YouTube videos. It does not void any warranty. "#ad The Vinyl Siding Institute recommends folding the bottom of corner posts. The purpose of this is to prevent animals getting in there. Over the years my preference is to run the J-channel straight through or if Im starting with starter strip to run the flashing straight through as code in my region requires a flashing. This covers that void at the bottom of the corner. I hope this video gives you an idea for another option if you are a corner folder. "Many installers dont put finish trim inside the J-channel when going around the window. Though this may work for lighter coloured siding with dark siding like this Mitten Black Board and Batten proper technique is key to avoiding rippling. This video shows another option instead of finish trim. Im making a bend with a [--] folding tool. A bend adds a lot of rigidity much like lines on a car. This way it keeps the siding nice and stiff ensuring that it wont ripple. You can see that its a snug fit so the wind cant blow it out either as it latches on the lip of the J-channel. "An area like this is prone to wall rot due to water missing the gutter and running behind the siding. When I started my career [--] yrs ago kick-out flashing wasnt seen in my region. Over the years roofers began installing them but they would typically just make a cut in the step flashing and bend it still leaving a small hole in the corner. "This is something Ive shown before - using a snap lock punch to create a locking flap that snaps into the gable trim. I realize many people in other regions have never seen gable trim before and are used to a regular rake drip edge. "Though Ive shown other methods I use for last rows the snap lock punch is the recommended way of the vinyl siding institute. I set up my trailer so that nothing is stacked and I can access a single piece of equipment individually at any given time. Youve all been there when you need the ladder on the very bottom of the stack - very annoying and inefficient. Thats why I made these and will always run"

Imagine not having to extend the knife blade every single time you pull it out. I leave it out and the thumb screw locked and its ready to used as soon as I pull it out.

As you can see my pantry door needed one of these from the beginning. Our guest bedroom door has a hole in it from the traditional style door stops due to family members goofing around and exerted too much pressure on the door stop. They really do make installing siding a joy. . . . . . . . . . . . . . ."

"If I wasnt in the trades and only had just ONE ladder for household tasks I would choose a combination ladder. Theyve come a long way over the years. The downside is that theyre all pretty heavy but the versatility is worth it if you only had one ladder. You can use it as an A frame ladder and set up one side longer than the other for places like stairs. It can convert to an extension ladder eliminating the need for multiple style ladders. A step ladder or extension ladder or A-frame ladder by itself is way lighter and easier to use but homeowners dont necessarily want to own all types. Often"

"The little details matter. Clipping the corners and spreading the edges of the soffit makes installation easier especially in a renovation like this one where the fascia is already installed. The pinched corners and edges often are the pain points went you hand cut it making it difficult to get the tongue into the groove. "When I used to train new siding installers I would advise them to take out their tape measure as little as possible. This results in higher efficiency less mistakes and greater ease of work.

"This is how I set up a pump-jack pole with extensions solo. I always put the extension at the bottom so I dont make the pole top heavy making it easier to lift. Though I have done it with the extension at the top before it isnt fun or easy especially since the pole with extension is heavier than my body weight (Im not joking). I was lazy and didnt dig a hole instead braced it against that scrap beam to prevent it from slipping while lifting it. You can brace it against the house but often times theres only 5-8 between houses here. Once stood up the brace is secured to the roof under the"

Ive seen so many crews needing [--] people to load and unload a trailer or if solo to climb onto the top of the trailer to load/unload. "This video shows the toolbelt I wore and the tools I carried for the soffit job I did yesterday. I try to keep my tool bags very minimalistic for all jobs. I didnt have the stapler on my person the entire time. It was mostly left at the plank where I was working and I only put it on my while installing so that I didnt have to carry a heavy nailer all day. This is a modular set up from Akribis Leather. The beauty of this set up is that it works if youre right or left handed. The RS8 square pouch is reversible and functions the same on either side. I bought my first Akribis Leather set up over"

"How long does your soffit/siding cutting table take to set up This set-up took [--] secs from start to finish before it was set up. My diy jig has been worth its weight in gold. I made it a few years before I was even on social media out of scrap OSB and 2x4 found in the job-site dumpster. My favourite part is its lightweight and compact size. It can cut a few sheets of soffit or siding at once and has measurements marked on the fence. I dont have plans for it but maybe this summer Ill make another one and film it just to show the process if theres enough interest. . . . . . . . . . . ."

"Did you know that DeWalt makes Electric Vehicle chargers I had no idea until I was on vacation rented an EV and saw one at a tool store. You can get them at Rona and Home Depot here in Canada. Who would have thought Our old family minivans transmission died on the highway on the way to snowboarding a couple of months ago. We decided to go all electric as a replacement vehicle since there were great government incentives. We were hesitant at first but were so glad we did. "Ive been using these Reechcraft Bronco sawhorses for a number of years now. I first bought mine from the US and had to import them into Canada because they werent available anywhere in Canada. Now you can get them on Amazon Canada as they have a store there. Each leg is adjustable from 3-5. Rated to 300lbs. I highly recommend these. Theres a link in my bio and discount code if youre in the market for one. "There are many ways to terminate the soffit at the end of a run. Sometimes I cut it and bend it up a bit. Sometimes I cut it off and put the scrap cut off under to space it out so it doesnt have a void and get pushed in. In this case it was just easiest for me to hold it up and bend it over with my hand - no tape measure no tools quick and easy without sacrificing quality. Its a good idea to know multiple ways to execute the same task in your job. Then as you approach each situation quickly decide which method is easiest for that situation. "I generally like to DIY things myself even if Ive never done it before. I chose to run this cable from my electrical panel in the basement out to the garage then hired an electrician to hook it up at the panel and the charger. I made sure to arrange this with the electrician before hand as often trades want to do the entire job and not come in and fix what the homeowner DIYd himself. I sent pictures and videos of what I did to ensure that everything was done correctly so he didnt have to re-do any of my work. "Ive installed both LP and Hardie siding. From an installers perspective Id much rather install LP over Hardie because its way easier and lighter to install. I remember one job where I had to hall Hardie panels up ladders by myself it wasnt fun. Doing the same with LP is a breeze. I know there are many people who prefer Hardie over LP. "This was one of the neatest things I saw at the Hardware Huddle today. I work with ladders all the time so I get all of the pain points. With most of my extension ladders I just take the string off completely because they often get in the way. This is definitely a neat innovation that little black box has a spring in it and operates much like an overhead garage door so it takes the weight off of the rope as youre pulling it up. It also slows the fall down in case you accidentally let go of the rope. These features were definitely thought through and will save you a lot of energy and headache"

"#ad The Vinyl Siding Institute recommends folding the bottom of corner posts. The purpose of this is to prevent animals getting in there. "An area like this is prone to wall rot due to water missing the gutter and running behind the siding. When I started my career [--] yrs ago kick-out flashing wasnt seen in my region.
