"According to Ottoman Chronicals cited by Turkish historian smail Hakk Uzunarl Kastrioti family original last name is Mazreku which most likely denotes their tribal affiliation. This was also noted in archival documents in Italy by Giovanni Comneno and later by Du Cange in 1680"
