"Best crypto exchanges for keeping fees low Hey all Im trying to determine which exchange(s) to use for buying crypto. I plan to hold for the long term in general so I wont really be doing a lot of frequent trading. My primary concern with exchanges are the fees involved with each one. Other considerations like UI and issues surrounding getting my crypto out of the exchange efficiently are also important. There doesnt seem to be an overwhelming consensus on this sub as to which exchange is the best (which is fair because they presumably have pros and cons). If my biggest concern is keeping"

"First Home Savings Account (FHSA) strategy With the FHSA account being openable as of April 1st [----] I thought it would be good to talk strategy and the specifics of how to utilize this account. People get into the nitty gritty of the differences between the TFSA and the RRSP (and for good reason) and I see no reason why we shouldnt do the same for this. Since someone with an FHSA will realistically have a shorter horizon in terms of when they will need to withdraw from this account what would be the best way to make use of this account My initial thoughts are that you probably would want to"

"Where to place a GIC Hey all with interest rates so high I figured I might as well take advantage of that to get some higher returns through GICs rather than having some extra money sitting around in a high-interest savings account. However I realized I hadnt really thought of how to approach GICs in terms of tax sheltered accounts. As of now Ive maxed out my TFSA and other tax shelters to the extent possible at my age with equities (mostly VEQT). "Conflicting information regarding ortho call Ive been hearing conflicting information about how demanding orthopaedic surgery call can be. I obviously acknowledge that this of course varies by centre catchment size call pool variability in scope (eg hand) etc. which is the case for most specialties. My understanding is that ortho is on the higher volume side amongst surgical specialties in terms of how many consults you will get while on call. With that being said does orthopaedics as a discipline have a lot of emergencies that must be dealt with overnight/during that call shift Or are most"

"Night float vs call What on earth is the point of call in specialties and/or large centres where the volume is so high that you are inevitably up most if not the entire night This in effect means that after your normal day shift you are subject to a second shift that keeps you up for [--] hours disrupts your circadian rhythm and lowers your performance as the waking hours drag on. If I want a surgical discipline that is lighter on call volumes and a bit more lifestyle oriented are my options essentially optho/uro/plastics/ENT All the usual caveats apply of course as call varies immensely within specialties by program catchment area call pool subtle differences in scope etc. I know that there are some nice gen surg subspecialties that are more lifestyle protected like bariatrics breast endocrine etc but man I dont want to go through a gen surg"

"Life post-residency In some ways of course life is better post-residency in terms of having fewer hours less call not having to perpetually study less scut work etc. However I think staff life is often portrayed as this beautiful light at the end of the tunnel. While its certainly an improvement Im starting to have a less idealistic view of staff life. In particular Ive noticed that junior staff seem to still take a lot of shit from senior staff. It seems as though they have to take on tougher cases often have to do more call then older staff or are potentially strung along further in the job"

"Hair transplant during residency Has anyone ever got one during residency How was the recovery time and did your colleagues clearly notice the implant Im intrigued by the fact that the procedure doesnt require a general and is not that invasive overall meaning a decent recovery process. Of course the hair growth itself is not instantaneous at all. With the brutal hours and very little time off in residency however I wonder how the recovery process would go. I also wonder about the comments from peers and patients while working. Who knows maybe its safe to wear a scrub cap after the operation"

"Why is rads considered a ROAD specialty Rads generally do quite well compensation wise and I often hear of them having a good amount of vacation time. While their hours are decent compared to a good chunk of other specialties the call seems quite brutal. Even though call pools are presumably fairly big in medium to large cities there are so many scans coming in nowadays that you are basically up all night from what I understand. Even as a staff with resident coverage I dont think you are going to have a relaxed night in many cases. Is rads more so in the ROAD category because of the money"

"Disadvantageous Canadian surgical hiring practices Hi all Im looking discuss the hiring specifics of surgical jobs in Canada as opposed to the US. If you spend time on American medical subreddits the sentiment seems to be that surgical jobs at community hospitals or outpatient practices/ACS trump academic jobs in terms of pay and often hours as well (Im generalizing of course). In Canada however I feel as though this distinction does not exist to the same extent. In any large or even mid sized city in Canada staff hiring at hospitals seems to be quite hierarchical and tough to break into."

"Can surgical residency be done without a huge number being done on the body A surgical resident once told me while being burnt out after a call shift that you can pick maybe one other thing to prioritize outside of residency whether it be fitness family etc. He had to continue working that day as he worked in a home call program meaning he was not afforded a post call day. My experiences since then have only seemed to add further support to his original claim. Surgical residents constantly seem tired and overworked even in ostensibly chiller specialties. "Too much surgical volume Is there ever such thing as too much volume in a surgical residency The common wisdom seems to be that the busier the better; more operative experience means you will be a better surgeon in the long run. While this has truth to it I think the picture may be more complex given the nature of really high volume centres. Junior residents at such sites may often end up mopping up consults ward issues and scut work that can never really be whittled down. A really busy program also theoretically constrains your ability to do more reading even if there are many opportunities"

"Why dont more plastic surgeons do purely cosmetics I was pondering this the other day. Aside from the obvious challenges of setting up a private cosmetics practice (capital costs staffing finding a suitable office marketing etc etc) why arent there more plastic surgeons that do private cosmetics almost exclusively Given that it is quite lucrative has a good (perhaps neurotic) patient population as opposed to many areas of inpatient plastics (burns hand or craniofacial trauma) and you would have a more predictable schedule free of the challenges of hospital based practices and call why dont"

For that reason I think call pool size matters a ton. Doing a guaranteed all nighter at 1/30 or even 1/15 would be markedly different from a 1/7 I would imagine. Weve certainly seen this in the US but it does feel like Vanguard Canada isnt quite as committed to this. They had a first mover advantage with VEQT and asset allocation ETFs in Canada to their credit. Since then it just doesnt seem like they are intent on cost cutting. Comparable BlackRock ETFs seem to be equivalent to or cheaper than their Vanguard counterparts. Curious to hear others thoughts on"

"Best crypto exchanges for keeping fees low Hey all Im trying to determine which exchange(s) to use for buying crypto. I plan to hold for the long term in general so I wont really be doing a lot of frequent trading. My primary concern with exchanges are the fees involved with each one. I obviously acknowledge that this of course varies by centre catchment size call pool variability in scope (eg hand) etc. which is the case for most specialties.

"Hair transplant during residency Has anyone ever got one during residency How was the recovery time and did your colleagues clearly notice the implant Im intrigued by the fact that the procedure doesnt require a general and is not that invasive overall meaning a decent recovery process. "Is it just me or does Vanguard Canada not seem as committed to cost cutting Part of Vanguards MO is supposedly to aggressively cut costs to create more competitive and investor friendly products.
