"What does a training session look like in your gym We start with a short warm up and shadow fighting then when our head coach is running the class he likes to do "technique of the day" kind of stuff (a series of techniques related to each other). We drill this for an hour. The gym remains open for a couple hours after and we do some sparring. Sometimes our head coach isn't there and our active fighters take over. It's more active drills and situational sparring (takedown/takedown defense getting up attack and defense drills wall work etc. where partners have different roles then we switch)."

"Effectiveness of the double leg My coach characterizes the double as pretty high risk and has encouraged me to use the snatch single as my go-to takedown. I have also heard similar things from say Khabib's instructional and Cain and DC's seminar on YouTube where they focus more on singles (DC does teach his signature high crotch in their seminar but after the single). I'm pretty sure these are not the only places I've heard this. The wrestling subreddit also discourages doubles for heavier wrestlers because getting sprawled on at heavyweight sucks. "Dropping into a sparring class I've been training for almost a year now. When traveling I try to drop in to MMA gyms in the area so I can keep training and also learn new stuff. So far all my experiences with the gyms I've visited have been wonderful. Right now I'm thinking of dropping into this gym that's headed by a former UFC fighter. It's some distance away from where I am staying and due to my busy schedule the only class I can make is their sparring class (as it says on their schedule). I have sparred at other gyms before but I first join the regular classes and as the coaches can see"

"Takedowns from the bodylock/double underhooks I always go for the very basic takedown (I don't know the name of it) where you push your head into their chest and pull with your locked hands on their lower back. I often do this on their side as well so that their leg is in reach for a block or trip. However sometimes they counter by leaning forward heavily so that I can't bend them back. Seems like I should get a throw by but if they have a whizzer I can't get it. Does anyone have any suggestions for other moves to try from what should be a pretty dominant position By bodylock I mean either"

I really enjoy grappling and in particular find the subject of closing distance in various martial arts very interesting. I know entries with single stick but I don't know how it's done with a two-handed weapon such as the longsword (or staff). In addition at my last (and so far only) longsword tournament the rules stated that I needed to keep control of my weapon when grappling. I had no idea on how to do this with the longsword so I just refrained from trying to grapple. In the FMA systems I"

"How do Buhurt fighters train First off I'm gonna preface that I've never done any Buhurt. Nearest club is quite far away. I mainly do FMA and MMA and I have done a little bit of HEMA. I've always found Buhurt very interesting though especially the group battles aspect. The group battles seem to me a combination of the usual (armed) martial arts and sports like football or basketball where there's a lot of running around flanking and so on. "Best lighter wrestler to use the spear The spear is more of a power wrestler move. But there have been smaller wrestlers using it most notably Edge/Cope. Which among them do you think use it best For me it would have to be Kairi. One of my favorite moments is her using it against Penta in LU - the first time she tries it it simply fails due to Penta being much bigger and stronger which makes sense. "Have you been able to use your checking hand in "blade rules" free sparring By "blade rules" I mean you treat the weapon in your hand as a sharp blade. We usually do this with trainers and not sticks. So no stuff like grabbing the blade tanking a hit and so on (those I use for "stick rules" where we treat the stick as a stick). I'm very fond of using my checking hand in stick rules. But in blade rules not so much. In fact I feel like I'm just doing fencing or HEMA. "Footwork in Buhurt I'm talking mainly about group fights. "Switching leads when using evasive triangular footwork There is this type of evasive triangular footwork called by many names depending on the system - open cross in Pekiti Tirsia tatlong bao in Ilustrismo hakbang paiwas in Lameco etc. Basically it's a diagonal step followed by a swing step. For a right-handed fighter with the right foot forward the step to the right is similar to a boxing pivot. But the step to the left switches leads and you end up with your left foot forward. If your hips and shoulders are aligned with your feet this puts the stick in the back I have been taught that I"

But I don't seem to recall many examples of it in MMA fights. Maybe I just haven't watched as many fights as I should. "Running is more complicated than most people seem to think Everyone says the best self-defense is running. Self-defense is not my primary goal in martial arts but I do incorporate running in my martial arts. "Who are some good "aggressive counter fighters" So some counter fighters will wait for their opponent to make a mistake. Some will not wait and instead make the opponents make that mistake for instance by pressuring them so that they panic and do something stupid that can be capitalized on. "What is your stance I stand pretty square because I like to use my checking hand. I like to keep my stick moving to protect my hand but I generally try to have it in front of my face. I'm right-handed and generally lead with my right foot but I will go off-lead from time to time. I'm thinking of lowering my stance to protect myself better from takedowns like double legs but I'm a little worried it will be very taxing and might affect my mobility. "Is it important that a position like fullback start in a 3-point stance I know it is important for the linemen because they immediately collide and want to be lower than their counterpart but the fullback is not on the line of scrimmage and will need to rise up a bit to run anyway and probably just lower their level once they anticipate contact. I was watching some footage of fullbacks and Vonta Leach seems to always start in 3-point while for Pat Ricard it seems to depend on the play (his 2-point stance seems pretty low still though). "Outnumbered [--] to [--] a Buhurt (armored knight fighting) competitor uses clever maneuvering and some beautiful judo to win the match for his team In Buhurt falling to the ground eliminates a participant from the match and so throws and takedowns (often from judo) where the thrower remains standing is incentivized. It is also full-contact so you can also just knock an opponent down or out with strikes (the blades are dull and thrusting attacks are banned for safety reasons so poleaxes are preferable to swords for this). "Most important drills (especially footwork drills) for a fullback/lead blocker/power back These kinds of positions are pretty interesting to me. They are basically made for contact but they don't make contact immediately like linemen do they have to run first. So they have to be low but also they have to run. Their focus is not the juking you see with more agile running backs but rather winning contact. I guess maybe a pulling O-lineman would be somewhat similar But these positions also need to really run. They're kind of halfway between a lineman and a back (they have D-linemen takes these"

"Is a big competition scene necessary for a martial art to become legit Let's use HEMA as an example. In HEMA there are several weapon sets and some of these (longsword rapier saber sword and buckler I think are the big 4) have fairly big competition scenes while others such as greatswords polearms and knives don't. You can easily see that the level of technique and strategy for the top competitors is very high. "A collection of MMA fighters from predominantly grappling backgrounds hitting the overhand right With the mechanics of the overhand right it pairs very well with wrestling shots especially the double leg or high crotch. They often start with a level change and both techniques rely on exploding off the rear leg (which the level change primes for). How do the mechanics of this work Usually on a penetration step we level change and the front leg steps forward while the back leg will be the one pushing off the mat and driving the whole body forward. At the bottom of the level change the back leg is primed to drive. In MMA sometimes a penetration step with the back leg instead of the front leg happens because some fighters will have a different lead for their striking than the lead they want to have when they shoot. "Oblique kicks Some time ago a guy visited our gym and was doing oblique kicks in sparring. I thought it was fine since he was doing them pretty light but then he caught me with one while I was shooting in for a takedown and it hyperextended my knee a bit.

And yet in the UFC everyone at the highest"

For a right-handed fighter with the right foot forward the step to the right is similar to a boxing pivot. But the step to the left switches leads and you end up with your left foot forward. "How do tight ends make up for being bigger (and presumably slower) when in the receiver role WRs rely a lot on speed and agility and they are guarded by some of the fastest players on the other side as well. They need to be really fast going onto their routes and they need to shake off the backs following them. They are some of the lightest but fastest players on the field. "Does kata have any crossover/applicability with kumite in your martial art I do MMA/FMA/a little bit of HEMA now but used to do WT TKD way back in my childhood (which is over a decade ago now). I can tell you that there's very little crossover between poomsae (what is called kata in Japanese martial arts) and sparring; if you've seen the WT TKD ruleset you probably get why that is. "Takedown defense and escapes from the bottom are of high importance in fighting In an actual fight if you get taken down things will go bad very quickly especially if you have more than one attacker. The person on top will also have an easier time putting weapons including improvised/weapons of opportunity in play. In a sport setting being on the bottom is also pretty bad. I thought it was fine since he was doing them pretty light but then he caught me with one while I was shooting in for a takedown and it hyperextended my knee a bit. Everything was eventually fine but man these kicks are dangerous I have no issues about using them in competition but how do you even train this kind of stuff (or train how to defend it) safely Side thoughts on the oblique kick: I remember from long ago every self-defense manual taught this technique and then when I first got into"

"How does everyone find time to lift I train [--] days a week. Each of those days I attend one or two classes (Muay Thai BJJ boxing MMA) at an MMA gym. There's some spare time I get at the gym outside of classes but I usually spend that sparring. I have a life outside of training too so I can't just add more training sessions - even if I could I do feel like adding lifting would put my body on the verge of overtraining. So how does one fit lifting sessions into their schedule and without overtraining MMA_Academy MMA_Academy"
