"This is the past 10yrs of earnings (EBIT) from Glencore's Coal Division. It's a pretty typical earnings profile of a commodity producer. It's a bad business most of the time. scratching around making a small profit for the most part then making good money for a very short period of time. My guess looking at their disclosures is there's something like US$25bn of capital tied up in these Assets (excl EVR). The average EBIT for the past 10yrs is US$3.2bn pa or XX% pa return on capital (pre-tax). BUT. if you take out that 18mth period of "excess returns" over 2022 into XX. that average EBIT drops"
