"Japan has not run consistent global trade surpluses since before the GFC. Its large ($193bn in 2024) current account surplus is due to large net income flow from its investments abroad. If you were to assume an X% return on this putative $550bn investment the XX% profit share would mean the U.S. would essentially appropriate a rent of $40bn annually or about XX% of Japans global current account surplus I guess a price Japan is willing to pay (or more accurately pretend to promise to pay) to partially protect its $69bn direct goods surplus with the U.S. So basically if actually implemented"
