Yes, Pachamama is primarily associated with the Andes, particularly among the Quechua and Aymara peoples. That much is clear.

But here's the issue: The Vatican event featured a carved image, ceremonial bowing, and the use of a fertility-mother-earth figure—which everyone from media outlets to indigenous representatives to Catholic commentators referred to as Pachamama. The problem wasn’t "Are these people from the Andes or the Amazon?" The problem was:

Why was a pagan goddess figure (by name or nature) being presented in a sacred Catholic context? Why were people prostrating before it?

Why was this imagery allowed within Vatican grounds, near or within consecrated spaces?

It doesn't matter if the exact tribe never worshipped Pachamama. What matters is:

The name was used.

The symbolism was pagan.

The setting was Catholic.

That’s not a hoax. That’s scandal.

If you’re trying to defend the event by saying, “Oh but it wasn’t that idol, it was just a different Earth Mother figure,” then you’re just arguing degrees of idolatry in St. Peter’s garden.
