Contextualizing the State of Education in Kano Amid Criticism of Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Administration

Recently, Danbello released videos highlighting a dilapidated school in Kano and a poorly executed classroom renovation allegedly under the watch of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration. While such footage can be alarming, it’s important to consider the broader context before drawing definitive conclusions.

According to the 2023 Kano State Annual School Census, the state hosts XXXXX public primary schools, not including private and Islamic institutions. Data from the 2021 census also identifies XXXXX junior secondary schools and XXX senior secondary schools. Out of XXXXXX classrooms across these public institutions, less than XX% meet the minimum acceptable standards. Primary and junior secondary schools are especially affected by infrastructural decay.

Enrollment figures further highlight the scale of the challenge: about XXXX million pupils are currently enrolled in public primary schools and XXXX million in public secondary schools, totaling nearly XXX million students. According to the Commissioner for Education, more than XX% of these students lacked chairs or desks as recently as 2023, a grim testament to the infrastructure crisis inherited by the current administration.

So, what has Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s government done in response?

• In late 2024, the administration distributed XXXXXX three-seater desks. A meaningful, though partial, step toward addressing the massive shortfall.

• Over XXXXX schools were renovated through a combination of World Bank AGILE program funds and state-level investments.

• The state absorbed XXXXX volunteer BESDA-trained teachers into permanent positions via a merit-based screening process.

• An additional XXXXXX teachers were recruited, significantly boosting human resource capacity in the education sector.

• Over X million educational materials including textbooks, exercise books, uniforms, sandboxes, and learning tablets were distributed across all XX local government areas.

• The administration also restored funding for secondary schools, which had been previously suspended.

• The administration cleared NECO, NBAIS, and NBTE exam fee backlogs from 2020–2023, enabling release of withheld student results.

• Paid N1.3 billion in 2024 for registration of XXXXXX indigent students for national exams.

• Provided JAMB forms to XXXXX Kano students, and funded SSCE fees for XXXXXXX federal candidates as part of inclusive policy initiatives.

While these achievements may not yet have erased decades of underinvestment, they demonstrate a clear and focused commitment to revitalizing education in Kano. Structural deficits of this magnitude cannot be reversed overnight. However, progress in infrastructure renovation, furniture provision, teacher recruitment, and educational resource distribution under the Yusuf administration signals a foundation for long-term recovery.

In summary, while criticisms like Danbello’s bring attention to real and urgent issues, they must be weighed against the inherited challenges and the strides already made. Much work remains, but with sustained investment and policy consistency over the next 2–3 years, Kano’s education sector can experience meaningful transformation.
