The US has a copper problem. Simply put we use a lot of it and there aren't enough American mines to pull it out of the ground fast enough. But, Ivanhoe Electric is getting close to opening the first US-based company to open a copper mine stateside in over a decade. President Trump signed an EO in March hoping to add copper to the list of critical minerals to streamline the process to get a permit. He also added a XX% tariff on copper imports. The US only produces XX% of the copper it uses. Another big problem it generally takes XX years for a mine to start producing copper once the permitting process begins. The good news is Ivanhoe Electric's Santa Cruz, Arizona project is expected to be up and running by 2028.
