Operation Rösselsprung ("Knight's Move") was a German special military operation launched on May 25, 1944, with the objective of capturing or killing Josip Broz Tito, commander of the National Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, at his headquarters in Drvar, western Bosnia.
The operation involved approximately XXXXXXX German and Axis troops. Its spearhead was the elite SS-Fallschirmjäger Battalion 500, consisting of around XXX to XXX paratroopers, who carried out an airborne assault directly into Drvar. They were supported by elements of the 7th SS Mountain Division "Prinz Eugen," the 373rd (Croatian) Infantry Division, the 369th (Croatian) Infantry Division, and the 92nd Motorized Regiment, which advanced overland to encircle the town.
Despite the surprise attack, fierce resistance from Tito’s 1st Proletarian Brigade and other Partisan units enabled Tito to escape through a cave system and be evacuated to safety.🫡
