NEW: Globalize the Inmate-fada: How Zohran Could Let Thousands of Prisoners Walk Free
Zohran Mamdani — the 33-year-old former amateur rapper, Democratic Socialist, and likely next mayor of New York City — has a lot of ideas. But the most impactful thing Mamdani might do as mayor isn’t freezing the rent or making buses free (it’s not clear the mayor can even do that stuff). Rather, Mamdani could enter Gracie Mansion and enact a long-held socialist dream: shuttering New York City’s jail system.
Here’s how that would work:
Under current law, New York will close the infamous Rikers Island jail complex in 2027. In its place, the City Council originally planned to build four new jails in the city proper, one in each borough except for Staten Island.
But the idea of building four massive jails on some of the most expensive real estate in the world — and on such a short timeline — was always unrealistic. Currently, the Brooklyn jail isn’t expected to open until 2029. The Queens and Manhattan facilities won’t open until 2032.
So what happens to the XXXXX pre-trial inmates currently being held at Rikers — mostly on charges like murder, robbery, and rape?
In theory, they could be transferred to jails in other counties. But doing so would be hugely expensive, and unprecedented in its scale. Instead, and more likely, Zohran — the socialist who has called to “abolish” incarceration, and referred to violence as an “artificial construction” — could simply… do nothing. And let thousands of prisoners walk free in the process.
@CharlesFLehman on how a future Mayor Mamdani will be in prime position to enact his radical, prison abolitionist agenda by default. Link threaded 👇
