One major difference between the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) and Nazi Germany was that the Croats viewed their state as explicitly Catholic and in full communion with Rome. In contrast, Germany had a mix of Catholics, Lutherans, and neo-pagans, and was not officially a religious state. Croatian concentration camps had official Catholic priests serving as chaplains, who conducted traditional Latin Mass and personally participated in mass murder.

Miroslav Filipović-Majstorović, a Bosnian Croat Catholic priest, Franciscan friar, and Ustaše military chaplain, infamously known as "Fra Sotona" ("Brother Satan"), was the in-house chaplain at Jasenovac! Auschwitz had no chaplain! 😃🫠
