CFDs only pay out when power prices fall below the strike price. If fossil fuels were priced to reflect their true cost—climate, health, pollution—renewables wouldn’t need subsidies. In fact, CfDs returned over £2.4 billion to consumers during the gas crisis, helping cut bills while fossil fuel firms made record profits.
