4/ At the time, the valley of the Great Salt Lake was barely known to Western man and a completely undeveloped desolate wilderness.
Just a few weeks previous to their arrival, famous frontiersman Jim Bridger had warned these Mormon pioneers that the Salt Lake Valley was too barren to support agriculture.
He allegedly offered $XXXXX for a single bushel of corn grown in the Salt Lake Valley, expressing skepticism that it could even be done.
He viewed the Great Basin as too dry and inhospitable for permanent farming settlements.
The local native Indian tribes cautioned the pioneers that the region was harsh and unforgiving, but initially welcomed them nevertheless.
