Over $X billion worth of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips have reportedly made their way into China’s black market just months after the U.S. imposed tighter export controls.
The chips, including the high-demand B200 used by major U.S. tech firms, were smuggled following new restrictions implemented by the Trump administration.
While the H20 chip was created to comply with earlier regulations, Chinese distributors focused on the more powerful B200. These chips were quickly sold to local data centers supporting Chinese AI companies. Sales were traced to provinces like Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Anhui, where the underground chip trade is thriving.
Though it’s technically legal to resell restricted chips within China if tariffs are paid, exporting them from the U.S. violates federal rules. Traders used online groups to coordinate shipments, with one distributor describing the market as chaotic and crowded, like a “seafood market.”
Nvidia maintains it has no evidence of unauthorized chip sales and denies knowledge of its restricted products reaching China. Still, the smuggling highlights the difficulty the U.S. faces in limiting high-tech exports.
The report surfaced just days after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited China, where he received a celebrity welcome. Despite regulatory pressure, Nvidia continues to show strong interest in the Chinese market.
