It was illuminating experiencing Moscow and realizing very quickly that it's a police state. Mass surveillance and heavy presence from half a dozen different types of cops ensures that a city of that size stays orderly. It's the kind of thing where you intuitively understand the deal after a few days. I'll take that deal if it means I don't have to worry about my wife walking through the city alone. In the US it's the worst of both worlds. We spent a fortune on the police state and get no safety in return.
