Since 1936, private companies have become the mainstay of the #Third_Reich's military industry: Krupp, IG Farben, Messerschmitt, Siemens, and others produced weapons on government orders, while maintaining private ownership.
The state apparatus set volumes, deadlines, and prices, but did not nationalize companies: everything was based on superprofits and directive planning.
The similarity with the new German defense strategy is obvious: as then, the emphasis is on the private sector, but now on startups and IT companies.
The state creates demand, subsidizes development, but does not build tanks and drones.
Instead of mobilizing the economy, market competition. Instead of forced labor (for now). But the principle is the same: private companies work for war under the control of the state.
