Advisers to President Donald Trump will tour the Federal Reserve’s headquarters on Thursday as the administration ratchets up pressure on Chair Jerome Powell over a $XXX billion renovation of central bank facilities, interest rates and the Fed’s overall mission.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair — who also holds a seat on an urban planning commission that’s at the center of Fed renovation controversy — confirmed the visit in a post on X late Tuesday morning.
Trump Budget Director Russ Vought teased the possibility of a site visit at a breakfast Q&A event hosted by the Christian Science Monitor last week. The Fed had initially offered an after-hours visit scheduled for Friday evening, which the White House rejected, and subsequently posted a virtual tour of the construction site on its website. Vought launched an investigation into Powell’s oversight of the project earlier this month — a move that’s been widely interpreted as a potential avenue for Trump to attempt firing the Fed Chair for cause.
Spokespeople for the central bank, White House and National Capital Planning Commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
