A Young Star’s Hidden Secret Revealed
This stunning image shows the dusty disc around the young star HD 135344B, located about XXX light-years away in the constellation Lupus. It combines data from two major observatories:
🔴 Red: Observations from SPHERE on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), capturing scattered light from small dust particles. 🟠🔵 Orange and blue: ALMA data showing millimeter-wavelength emissions from larger dust grains in the disc.
The original images, released in 2015 (ALMA) and 2016 (SPHERE), revealed spiral arms and gaps suggestive of planet formation—but no planet had been detected at the time.
In 2025, astronomers finally found clear evidence of a forming planet within the disc, confirming years of speculation.
