NOAA’s GOES East satellite captured an impressive solar filament eruption unfolding over XX hours on July 14, 2025.
In a cosmic coincidence, this eruption occurred on the 25th anniversary of the Bastille Day Solar Event — one of the most powerful solar storms of the space age, which erupted on the same date in 2000.
Solar filaments like this one are massive strands of plasma suspended above the Sun’s surface by magnetic fields. When they erupt, they can send shockwaves and charged particles hurtling through the solar system.
