A 29-year-old man named Richard Pillar randomly attacked an 83-year-old woman on a street in Windsor, stabbing her in the eye multiple times. He didn’t know her, she was just out walking, and he jumped her from behind, knocked her down, and stabbed her in the face.
It happened in 2016, and this week a judge ruled that Pillar isn’t criminally responsible because of his mental illness. He suffers from schizophrenia and told doctors he was hearing voices, including one he believed was from CSIS, telling him to stab a woman and take her eyeball to cook and eat.
Both the Crown and defence doctors agreed that he was so mentally ill at the time, he didn’t understand that what he was doing was wrong.
He’s not being let go, though. A review board will decide if he should be locked up in a psychiatric hospital and under what level of security. It’s expected he’ll be held in a secure mental health facility and get long-term treatment.
The victim survived, but the attack left her badly injured and traumatized. She still has headaches, dizziness, double vision, and struggles to go outside. She said the attack made her feel like a prisoner in her own life, and she’s terrified Pillar might come after her again one day.
Pillar had already pleaded guilty, and on top of this case, he’s also facing charges for assaulting a correctional officer while in custody.
