USMNT legend Tim Howard is a big guy with a big personality. He wasn’t really afraid of anyone on the pitch.
Except Howard Webb, the former Premier League referee.
“He was some sort of a police officer, he was in law enforcement,” Howard said.
“His ability to diffuse situations, and by the way, his shoulders and biceps and chest were like it was a barrel.”
“So when you walk up to him, you’re like, ‘I’m not really sure what I’m going to say to him right now.’ I’m trying to yell at him and he’s like a school teacher.”
“I’m like, ‘I got nothing to say to this guy that’s going to affect him.’ He was amazing, he was brilliant in the way he handled the players.”
“I talked about the referee education. He got that education in law enforcement, so he knew how to deescalate situations.”
Howard Webb was a sergeant in the South Yorkshire Police before turning professional as a referee, working from 2005 to 2014.
He was the referee for the 2010 World Cup final. Since retirement, he worked as the Manager of VAR Operations for Major League Soccer's Professional Referee Organization, among other things.
