The show was not "abruptly cancelled". The contract they have with Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart's companies to produce the show was up for renewal and they did not chose to extend beyond the scheduled contract end of mid-June 2026.

Perhaps if Colbert and Stewart were not so greedy and reduced their profits, CBS might have seen the show as being viable going forward. They charge CBS about $X million a week ($1 million per show) for their production inputs. It is the most expensive talk show to produce in the US market. In contrast, Lorne Michaels/Broadway Productions charge NBCUniversal about $XXX million per week ($425K per show.

It is about money and advertisers where not interested to pay more for a show that does not appeal/attract to target demographic audiences. Rumors are that Colbert and Stewart had asked for XX% increase to produce the show.
