A street scene in San Augustine, 1939. Simply stupendous in every way. From the grocey and feed sign to the Dr. Pepper "Good for You" lettering with the period after "Dr." to the Hershey's cocoa and Our Mother's Cocoa in the store to the two men talking on the left, the group of men standing in the center, and above all the two rakish young men on the right leaning up against the window and looking at photographer Russell Lee, the photography is a symphony. One of his very best. The sign for the Cafe Texan, the Sanitary Barbershop sign ... it's just too much ... a hazy, nostalgic, sepia-toned dream of an image.
