What a weird response. Of course we know. She’s saying why does she have to identity as that instead of just American like white people do.
Chinese American. African American Hispanic American….
See the pattern? I’ve never heard people identify themselves as British American and most only say Irish American or Danish American on specific days or for fun.
So white people are American and everyone else has to identify as something else, then American.
So if she doesn’t want to identify or be identified as African when she’s not from the continent of Africa and isn’t a first or second generation immigrant from an African nation I say good on her and that should be respected.
Their is nothing obtuse about it and if you listened to her instead of being offended on her behalf as if it’s a racist attack by herself on herself, you might have understood that.
