We absolutely need to move away from political extremism - and on that point, I completely agree with the left. Which is exactly why we should abolish the Human Rights Act and strip out ECHR-style clauses from our immigration laws. The current status quo isn’t moderate; it’s a form of legalistic extremism, totally unfit for the modern world. It’s hard to imagine either Jim Callaghan or Margaret Thatcher supporting it if they were alive today.
For the record, the policy of mass deportations has already received the full backing of the Mass Deportations President-in-Chief: Barack Obama. A calm, centrist Dad by any definition. We should follow his lead.
Closing detention centres is a dangerous retreat from ‘state capacity’, something Tyler Cowen rightly identifies as essential for a functioning society. We need to reopen detention centres, and build more. X
