She was born in 🇵🇸 Palestine in 1945, before the Zionist Entity existed. She held a Palestine passport. Her family didn’t arrive with a rifle or a UN resolution. They were already here.
Like Leila Khaled, she was radicalized. Not in Paris or through campus activism, but in the land where she was raised, under an occupation that shaped every part of her life. She believes her people have the right to self-determination, the right to build, to resist, and to live without checkpoints or soldiers in their orchards.
By the Zionist entity she has been arrested, surveilled, dragged through courts. Labeled a terrorist. Dismissed as a fanatic. But she is also a mother, a teacher, a builder of communities.
Surely she deserves a mural in Banu Baraq, a lecture at Berkeley, a children’s book in translation!
In 2002, her daughter’s family was massacred. Her daughter and granddaughter survived only by hiding while the rest of the family was shot dead in their home.
But of course you didn’t expect her to radicalize. That kind of understanding is reserved for others.
