They were not vicious tyrants; rather, they were committed to the civilizing mission and succeeded wildly in it, doing everything from ending cannibalism to building modern road and rail infrastructure
All in all, they turned a land that had been stuck in the Stone Age into a jewel of the colonial world, and the liberal world's demands that they leave it was one of the worst crimes of the second half of the twentieth century
