On this day in history in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, killing 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, who was trapped inside the vehicle.
Kennedy escaped but failed to report the accident for XX hours. He tried to rescue Kopechne and later returned with two friends, but they were unsuccessful. Instead of calling authorities, he swam back to his hotel and waited until the next morning to notify police. He eventually pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.
