I asked a technical analyst to flag key resistance levels in the GFEX lithium carbonate future and they flagged Rmb70,000/t (US$9.7/kg) as the next breakout level, Rmb77,900/t (US$10.8/kg) as a prior trend trigger and, if prices went through that, medium-term targets around Rmb82,850-102,100 (US$11.5-14.2/kg).

What would that mean for stocks? Well, at prices around US$10.8/kg most low-cost brine assets are profitable, and that only becomes more so at US$11.5-14.2/kg. It's a similar situation for miners, with implied SC6 prices around US$850-900/t at the Rmb77,900/t level and north of US$1000/t at levels above Rmb87,000/t.

While levels north of Rmb82,850/t (US$11.5/kg) bring higher cost producers back towards profitability, I continue to believe that the lower cost producers have the best risk/reward balance in the sector at the moment.
