Philips $PHIA.AS $PHG was once an innovative consumer company, making TVs, radios and lightbulbs. Comparable with today’s $SONY or even $ASML.

But due to poor capital allocation and a lack of innovation, it’s become a shadow of its former self.

Out of curiosity, I skimmed their annual report. Turns out they barely manufacture anything themselves anymore. Low-cost Asian factories do the work, using Philips’ patents. Philip’s logo gets slapped on, and Philips earns a licensing fee.

Meanwhile, debt levels are sky-high (compared to their cash level and EBITDA).

Not the kind of business long-term quality investors get excited about.
