SUITCASES? Is it worth it for semi- frequent travel to step up from the cheap option at Target or Amazon to at least the next level up?

Yes! What you gain, more pockets, strong zippers, smoothing rolling, longer handle, replaceable wheels and a system of bags that work nice together. And the bag will last several years longer than the no longer so cheap option from Target!

Some options flight crews choose:

  1. TravelPro. Bags are well designed to maximize packable space within standard size limits. They have extra pockets, strong zippers, are lightweight. They don’t last as long as some others on the list, but will last most non-Road Warriors several years. My current bag is the extended trip TravelPro. TravelPro also has deals with several airlines to provide the cabin crew with luggage.

  2. LuggageWorks. This will look like a standard pilot bag to those who are in airports often. They are extremely durable, and the most popular version includes a metal frame. The warranty is excellent, and the company will refurbish the bag at minimal cost allowing pilots (notoriously cheap) to use the same bag for years. Ultra heavy weight zippers and extra pockets where they are most useful. This is the bag my brother-in-law uses (a B756 Captain).

  3. Tumi. A primary luggage choice of Road Warriors. The most expensive option on the list, and luggage that looks “luxury”. This is also an exceptionally designed system of luggage that works together with nice extras. Very light weight for the size, and lots of pockets and features that makes packing and organization easy. This is the luggage my twin sister chose.
