"We've had two "not boring" sessions in a row despite generally positive inflation data and bullish $NVDA/AI news. Boring is better for markets and when "not boring" action happens around expirations my spidey senses get a little extra tingly. With that said $SPX/ $SPY holding 6200/620 during the Trump/Powell headlines yesterday was a good sign as was the fact that equities continue to rotate. $RUT/ $IWM small caps and $BKX/banks are in the lead again today but the other indexes and most of the megas are also green. This is pressuring VOLs lower and $VIX is back with a 16-handle after tagging"

"$VIX tried on a 15-handle this morning for the first time since Liberation Day and with it the July and August $VX contracts are at new lows with the rest of the curve not too far behind. As far as the VIX futures term structure is concerned all is right in the world. Noteworthy is the $VVIX divergence. It is nearly XX points above its low of XX from back in May. VVIX's 10-day correlation to VIX and the VX futures is plunging nearing levels that put me on the defensive. VVIX could certainly catch down to VIX and VX futures but I'm now on the lookout for other signs that VOLs are bottoming"

"$VX futures especially further out the curve held firm today despite new highs on $SPX and $NDX and an overall calm session across equities and rates. $SDEX and $TDEX also moved higher. No warning signs from $VIX or $VVIX yet but the VIX futures have my attention"

"Equities grinding/rotating their way to new highs on a summer Friday with a $VIX futures curve in contango does not bode well for those hoping to get a VOL spike. $VVIX is asleep rates are calm and the mega caps are nearly all green. As I noted late yesterday $VX futures remain relatively firm which is something to keep an eye on. Whether they are sniffing out something somewhere or just being cautious is TBD. As VIX continues to slide this is creating more space between the VX curve and spot VIX. VIX could rise to close the gap or if nothing concerning materializes the futures will have to"

"This morning is a great example of how even a flat $VIX this late in the VIXpiration cycle can be rough on the front month $VX contract. In this case July VX still has X vol of premium to chew through in four sessions. If VIX doesn't climb July VX will have to do all the work and keep dropping. Fixed strike VOL has also taken a beating this week and this morning we see $VVIX retreating lower which is reducing some of the divergence I noted yesterday. I still think pressure is building in the system but VOLs are well-protected by the steepness of the VX curve and the healthy mechanics I've"

"The July $VIX futures contract expired this morning and with it the options tied to it. Per @spotgamma data the biggest gamma strike on the board was the put-heavy XX strike. It's no coincidence VIX has been stuck in the XX to XX range since late June and sits XX this morning. Now we see if this morning's expiration releases VOLs to move more freely. Expect some extra noise before we get a clear signal. The 6200/620 level on $SPX/ $SPY is the one to watch. Above 6200 and equities should remain calm; below it I suspect VOLs wake up. We're relying on $RUT/ $IWM small caps $AAPL $GOOGL and $TSLA"
