"As a massive fan of pixel art I will say that Defender of the Crown (Cinemaware 1986) belongs to a very elite group of exceptional games. Yes the gameplay isn't overly complex but what Jim Sachs (born in 1949) created here is timeless beauty. To me this is art"

"Doom (id Software 1993) revolutionized gaming as the quintessential first-person shooter. I debated which game impacted the genre most; Wolfenstein 3D Duke Nukem Half-Life Quake and Unreal were contenders (subjectively). Doom won for me; its gaming and pop culture impact (they even made a Doom movie) are undeniable. Released in December of 1993 for MS-DOS players control "Doomguy" a nameless space marine on Mars' moons battling demonic hordes unleashed by Union Aerospace Corporation's teleportation experiments gone wrong. John Carmack's innovative Doom engine delivered textured"

"Elite written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell was originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro in September 1984. Its open-ended gameplay and revolutionary 3D graphics led to ports on virtually every home computer earning it classic status and genre-defining acclaim. The title derives from achieving the top combat rating of "Elite" - something I never managed despite countless tries. One early challenge is docking onto a space station. Without a docking computer (a purchasable upgrade for your ship) it was a major ordeal that I failed many times. The main objectives of the"

"My first contact with RTS games was Dune II Command & Conquer Age of Empires and Warcraft. I was never particularly good at them but they fascinated me and I loved playing them. When StarCraft (Blizzard 1998) was released I knew I was in for a treat. What amazes me most is how well this game has aged still being played competitively by so many around the world. I sometimes wonder what the magic formula was. Very few games almost XX years old are still played today - thats a select and elite group and StarCraft is definitely part of it. It almost feels magical and a lot of that magic has been"

"Bullfrog Productions founded in 1987 in Guildford England by Peter Molyneux and Les Edgar revolutionized gaming with innovative titles like Populous (1989) the pioneering god game that sold over X million copies Syndicate (1993) Theme Park (1994) Theme Hospital (1997) and Dungeon Keeper (1997). Acquired by Electronic Arts in 1995 the studio expanded but faced rushed development and key departures including Molyneuxs move to Lionhead Studios in 1997. It merged into EA UK in 2001 and ceased to exist as an independent entity leaving a legacy of genre-defining simulation and strategy games. Among"

"Fallout (1997) developed by Tim Cain's team at Interplay's Black Isle Studios is an isometric turn-based RPG in a retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic world after the 2077 Great War. Its brilliant style features a distinct dystopian look and feel incredible music and sound effects and an immersive story. The intro alone is a masterpiece. Players emerge from Vault XX as the Vault Dweller seeking a water chip amid moral dilemmas mutants and factions in Southern California (2161). Acclaimed for its gameplay it sold over half a million copies revitalizing RPGs despite modest expectations. It spawned"

"Westwood Studios was founded XX years ago in 1985. It was acquired by Virgin Games in 1992 which was then bought by Electronic Arts in 1998. I consider Westwood Studios one of the pillars of 90s gaming. Their first self-developed game was Questron II (1988); before that they mainly did ports for other developers. Most people associate the studio with these four classics: ⚔ Eye of the Beholder II (1991) ⚔ The Legend of Kyrandia (1992) ⚔ Dune II (1992) ⚔ Command & Conquer (1995) They are part of the fabric of gaming history"

"In the 80s and early 90s Electronic Arts was a great developer/publisher but as Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight said so eloquently You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. In the wake of their acquisitions they left utter destruction of once-legendary game studios. While the full list is much longer here are the four most influential names and their demise: ❤ Origin Systems acquired 1992 for $XX million shut down 2004. ❤ Bullfrog acquired 1995 for $XX million shut down 2001. ❤ Maxis acquired 1997 for $XXX million shut down 2019. ❤ Westwood Studios acquired"

"Design peaked in the 90s an iconic interface that raised an entire generation: WINAMP It reminds me a bit of those 80s Kenwood stereo systems - lots of flashy colours buttons switches treble balance bass. "Slap Fight for the Commodore XX released in 1987 by Imagine Software is a brilliant vertical scrolling shoot 'em up port of Toaplan's 1986 arcade hit (known as Alcon in the US). Pilot the SW475 fighter through alien-infested skies on planet Theron and battle waves of foes with power-ups like lasers missiles and bombs for devastating combos. The controls were super crisp and the power-up system required you to plan ahead a bit (I used to prioritize speed first then better weapons afterwards). It wasn't an easy game but it never felt unfair. It was ported for Amstrad CPC Atari ST Commodore 64"

"These XX games were all published in 1985. I have no idea how I got anything done back then (I was 10) because I played them all. Looking back now those are some brilliant games for 1985 considering the technical limitations of hardware XX years ago. Incredible memories. A few years later I tried to redraw the cover art of "The Pawn" pixel by pixel. It took me a few days but it looked amazing. Can't believe how dedicated we were as gamers back then"

"Prince of Persia (Broderbund 1989) by Jordan Mechner is one of those very few timeless games that made my jaw drop when I first played it and still looks brilliant today. The player's main objective is to lead the unnamed hero out of dungeons and into a fortress tower within XX minutes bypassing traps and fighting hostile swordsmen. The game consists of twelve levels (though some console versions have more). After reaching level X a game session may be saved and resumed later. What sounds like a simple premise has become one of history's most recognizable games. Ask any gamer from that era"

"Rampage released in 1986 by Bally Midway for arcades lets up to three players control giant monsters: George (ape) Lizzie (lizard) and Ralph (wolf) - mutated humans from Scumlabs experiments. I have spent a fair bit of money on this genuinely fun game back in the day and then countless hours on my C64 and Amiga. Climb skyscrapers smash buildings eat fleeing citizens for health and battle tanks helicopters and soldiers across XXX North American cities. Lose health and revert to naked humans for a cheeky laugh. Its chaotic co-op destructible environments and monster movie vibes made it a hit"

Players zone residential commercial and industrial areas on gigantic isometric maps managing budgets traffic pollution and waste - a new mechanic that was absent in SimCity 2000. "The Immortal (Electronic Arts 1990) is an isometric action-adventure game created by Will Harvey. A wizard seeks his mentor in a large dangerous labyrinth. The game had high graphic violence according to reviews from that time (but very tame by today's standards). Mordamir calls for help from deep within the labyrinth contacting Dunric. The player an elderly wizard discovers the message and quests to rescue his mentor Mordamir. The story starts straightforward but holds big surprises especially at the end. "When I think of MicroProse I think of Sid Meier. When I think of their games the list usually starts with Civilization (my all-time favorite) but a very close second is Railroad Tycoon (1990). You manage a railroad company buy trains set schedules connect towns build infrastructure and watch your empire grow. The attention to historical detail only later caught my eye. The steam engine trains of that era the later stages electrical trains wonderful pixel-style graphics and game's pace - it still plays well today XX years later. "When Colonization (MicroProse 1994) was first published I thought it was just a little "side quest" game based on Civilization. And while there are some similarities the emphasis in Colonization is much more on exploration trade and skill development rather than expansion war and world domination. The diplomatic aspect also plays a much bigger role compared to Civilization. You start in 1492 and control the colonial forces of either England France the Netherlands or Spain. You are given one ship and two units arriving at the new world; as the ship moves into the unknown the map is revealed"

"The most expensive game I ever played Gauntlet easily. Let me tell you why. In 1985 the arcade version of Gauntlet was released. There was an arcade mall about XX kilometers from where I lived so my friend and I would ride our bikes there nearly every weekend for about a year. One game credit cost XX Pfennig (roughly $0.25) and wed each spend around XX Deutsche Mark per weekend totaling about XXX Deutsche Mark ( roughly $250) over that year. If Id invested that money in Apple stock instead Id have around $900000 today accounting for stock splits and price growth. So yeah Gauntlet was the most"

"Warcraft: Orcs and Humans (1994) Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (1995) Warcarft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) World of Warcraft (2004) I played the first one in 1994 and loved part II and III as well. I was overwhelmed (in a good way) with World of Warcraft when it came out in 2004 it was the best thing ever for an old-school Dungeons & Dragons nerd from the 80s. "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is a 1992 point-and-click adventure masterpiece by LucasArts. Set in 1939 archaeologist Indiana Jones races Nazis to uncover the lost city of Atlantis. Teaming with psychic Sophia Hapgood players solve intricate puzzles across locales like Crete Egypt and Iceland using wits and fists (yep Indy still packs a mean punch). Featuring witty dialogue John Williams' score and SCUMM engine brilliance it's hailed as Indy's finest game (and better than some films). "I know this might be an unpopular opinion but my all-time favourite RPG is Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (Sir-Tech 1992). I've lost count of the hours days weeks and months invested in it. Where to start Off the top of my head: incredibly long and complex story beautiful graphics great spell system wonderfully unique enemies round-based tactical fights and a brilliant levelling system with a gazillion attributes. To me it's as close to perfection as you can get. The Wizardry series always stood in the shadows of Ultima and The Bard's Tale despite Wizardry I and Ultima I being"

"One thing I miss a lot from the 80s and 90s gaming era is the distinct design look and feel and incredible artwork that some designers brought forth. Modern games have become more realistic but at the cost of losing that pixel-style vibe and sensation. When I play a game I like feeling immersed in it - and the more realistic games look the less I feel that old magic the sensation of being lost in a game and marveling at its beauty. I feel that this is a true form of art and sadly it has been lost in most modern games. Screenshots are from the game Future Wars (Interplay 1989). This one among"

"If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that) but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game the graphics are pretty good the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing) gameplay is complex and variable and replay value is gigantic. To me Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours"

"Often I debate Sid Meier's masterpiece: Pirates Civilization Colonization Railroad Tycoon. or Alpha Centauri. All are great but Alpha Centauri wins it for me. Alpha Centauri (1999) by Sid Meier's Firaxis is a groundbreaking 4X strategy masterpiece and Civilization's spiritual successor. "Raid over Moscow (Access Software 1984) is one of the hardest games Ive ever played. Maybe because I was still young but mostly because that take-off and hangar exit sequence lives rent-free in my head (and Im quite sure Im not the only one who struggled to get that plane out). Controlling direction speed and altitude in an isometric view wasnt the easiest way to start a game. Raid over Moscow was also indexed in Germany upon release (Germany was oddly strict about many titles) which only made us want it more.
