Problem is the big dogs like Altium Siemens Cadence and others have the most money and XP @seveibar Find the smaller steppingstones that provide real value to the people doing this full time then build on that. "At first I thought this guy was talking about phase matched lengths between the plus and minus on the differential pairs. But no he is saying that different layers will be faster or slower than others because of slight discontinuities in impedance. What I think is happening is that his length matching is not taking into account the distance the traces go through the vias. And so traces that are on the blue layer and don't go through vias are slightly out phase with the other pairs that have to jump layers and have that extra length from the via. Good length matching tools will account for"

Sheild cans that keep noise in are trying to pass emissions for commercial products. This board is clearly blind and buried via design. The regions where the caps on the backside huddle near the ICs but you can't see any via arrays or circuitry around it. Its ALL inside and the vias don't even poke through the bottom. And I did not look up any tutorials I asked for help in a few places they have a discord where you can ask question and lots of people here on twitter use it and talk about it. My impressions are positive. I have used over a half dozen pcb design software tools and none of them are perfect. Definitely true for this as well but it does a good job at no cost to the user and allows the user to customize it. It has a lot more advantages than it does down sides. KiCAD is Blind Via Approved."

"For years YEARS people have asked me "what is a blind via" And I finally have an audience that doesn't ask me that question all the time because many know some of you probably followed just because of my name. For those of you who are not familiar vias are the drilled and plated holes that go through a PCB to connect the layers of 2d wires that are on the inside and outside of a board. Regular vias go all the way through. But blind vias only go part of the way through. So you can only see them on one side of the board. Thus their name. "What is Lead Protrusion The distance that the pin extends beyond the bottom of the PCB is known as Lead protrusion. And when your pin is too short and there is no protrusion the strength of the solder join itself suffers. Connectors will go through more mechanical stress then other parts. Excessive lead protrusion can be addressed by trimming the pin afterwards. But may result in other challenges during assembly such as shorts if using wave soldering. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2019796382690017409 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2019796382690017409"

"Output files pt2: PCB gerbers odb or IP-2581 are essential. But supporting documentation is also a really good idea such as: -Bill of Materials -IPC-D-356 (when using gerbers) -Fabrication Drawing -Assembly Drawing Sometimes you can include the BOM inside the odb or even put it on the assembly drawing but I prefer having it as a separate file as well even in those instances. "High Voltage Clearance When your voltage starts to exceed 24-48 volts you should consider it to be high voltage and provide additional spacing from other conductive objects. The higher the voltage is the more spacing you will need. IPC-2221 provides guidance for how much. Traces that are internal vs external are treated differently as well as the environment you are in. High voltage behaves differently at sea level than it does at higher altitudes. Conformal coating can be used to provide additional protective insulation. Cores: are sheets of dielectric with Copper plated to them. Prepreg: Are sheets of just dielectric and fresh epoxy to act as a bonding agent between the layers it is placed. Foil: Foil sheets are just copper no dielectric. In the example shown a thick core is intentionally chosen with thinner external prepregs bonding the upper foil layer to the inner layers. "When drilling the plated through holes. It is ideal to hit the pad in the center. But the real world is far from ideal. the layers themselves often are not perfectly aligned with minor drift of a few mils in different directions. Furthermore this is true for the drill itself. So having proper tolerance to account for this is why you want to have annular ring. "PCB Cavities I don't get to do this very often in practice. But there are processes for providing cavities on your PCB that allow you to recess parts for height or other reasons. This is a lot easier when you are putting die in the cavity instead of regular chips. Cause you can just mill out the cavity depth control instead of doing a dual lamination cycle that would probably be required for having pads to install the parts to on the lower layers like shown in this graphic. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2022584099320352967 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2022584099320352967"

"Flex Circuits Rigid PCBs use woven fiberglass and epoxy as the substrates but Flex use different materials such as Polyimide (Kapton) which is very durable to high temperature. Useful for many applications to have a circuit that can bend and change shape compared to the stiff counterparts. In the image bellow you can see each of these flex example have "stiffeners" attached to them in areas that need to be rigid. The flex can be damaged pretty easily with too much stress so these stiffeners are necessary where you plug your connectors. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2023079368743129281"

"3d model renders do this in KiCAD and Altium and probably other tools. close to what you want. But I still think the paper method is peak. Sometimes there are things you can't predict digitally like mistakes. And when you have the kit in hand those mistakes become immediately noticeable even if you spent hours checking digitally.
