Back in the day (when John Ford was working) you needed a lot of light to get an exposure which meant shooting in a controlled environment with a lot of electricity. Then film stocks got better then digital cine cams and now unless you're building elaborate sets that don't exist IRL (think spaceships etc) there's very little reason to shoot in a studio"
