@RichardBarrow "Good morning from Krung Thep Aphiwat Station Today Im setting off on my three-week research trip by train through Southern Thailand and Malaysia. Ive been planning this for a long time. I was originally meant to take this trip back in April but I had to cancel because of a knee injury. Im still far from fully recovered and need a walking stick to get around but Ive been preparing for this over the past two months by walking 10000 steps a day and climbing XX flights of stairs. I still cant bend my knee fully without pain but at least on trains Ill be able to get up and move around. For this"

"1/4 I had a relaxed morning in Ban Krut Prachuap Khiri Khan. We did a two-hour local tour with Uncle Chai who drove us around in his saleng (a motorbike with a sidecar). Its a fun and easy way to explore this quiet coastal town. I had met him the last time I was here and he still remembered me. #BanKrut #PrachuapKhiriKhan #WatThangSai #FishingVillage #SalengRide #ThailandByTrain #CoastalThailand #Thailand"

"Our lunch was at Caf de Wa alongside our hotel in Ban Krut. Although we could have eaten on the beachfront its sometimes nice to have air conditioning. Dont you think πŸ“MAP: #ThaiFood #Thailand"

"One of the most surprising finds in Chumphon Wat Tham Pong Pang () at Hat Sai Ri Beach. This all-white temple sits right by the sea yet hardly anyone seems to visit. It really deserves to be listed as an Unseen Thailand site. The main ordination hall is beautifully detailed with intricate stucco work all around similar in style to the White Temple in Chiang Rai but with its own southern charm. Look closely and youll spot some unusual figures among the carvings one appears to be using a mobile phone another looks like a Muay Thai fighter. Its a mix of traditional and modern touches that makes"

"My stay in Ban Krut was really too short but Im on a three week research trip and so I need to keep moving. The hotel I chose this time was Baan Grood Arcadia Resort & Spa recommended to me by one of my followers. This is right on the beach front and close to some popular restaurants. They also came to pick us up at the railway station as a free service. 🏨 More about the hotel: #Thailand #BanKrut"

"Lunch today was at Pad Thai Thaad Ban Mor Taew () in Chumphon a popular local spot famous for its Pad Thai with fresh shrimp (). The noodles were topped with big juicy prawns. We also had a few side dishes including stir-fried morning glory () stir-fried bai liang leaves with egg () a southern Thai favourite and Thai fish cakes (). Everything tasted fresh and homemade. πŸ“Map: #Chumphon #ThaiFood #PadThai #Thailand"

"There are quite a few viewpoints in Chumphon but Khao Chao Mueang Viewpoint () has to be one of the best. From here you get sweeping views over the coast and nearby islands including Ko Maphrao () a small coconut-covered island with a white sand bar connecting two parts of the island. Surprisingly there was hardly anyone else here which made it even more peaceful. Theres also a large standing Buddha image at the top and several shaded spots to sit and enjoy the view. πŸ“Map: #Chumphon #Thailand #Viewpoint #KoMaphrao #UnseenThailand #TravelThailand"

"For breakfast this morning I had Roti Sarang Burung which literally means birds nest bread. Its a crispy roti canai with two eggs cooked in the middle and spicy sardine sambal on the side. The mix of soft egg yolk flaky roti and rich sardine sauce worked really well together. Simple but full of flavour. A nice change from the usual roti canai and a great way to start the day. I was brought here by Mak a member of my Asian Train Guide Facebook group. He spotted me walking around town. We ate at Roti Canai Railway opposite the old railway station in Taiping. He then kindly showed me around his"

"2/3 The street art was a definite highlight. Some of it is huge and bold others are tucked away in quiet corners. I also loved seeing the mix of buildings. Some beautifully restored others old and crumbling but full of character. There are lots of cafs and tourist restaurants if you need air conditioning. But I preferred looking for places where locals eat. Its more of a challenge but the food is usually better and cheaper. #Ipoh #IpohOldTown #StreetArt #WalkAndExplore #AsianTrainGuide #MalaysiaByTrain"

"This is my plan for the trains in Malaysia. I crossed the border at Padang Besar and now Im heading down to Kuala Lumpur with overnight stops in Taiping and Ipoh. I will then be taking the MySawasdee international express direct to Hat Yai for a two night stay before returning to KL on the same train. I will then continue southwards to Johor Bahru via Kluang before taking the Jungle Train back north up to Tumpat on the border with Thailand. I am hoping SRT will launch the Bangkok to Butterworth international train at the end of this year. When they do I plan to be on the first train and spend"

"Breakfast today in Ipoh β˜•πŸž. I stopped by a small food court behind the clock tower and had Roti Telur Goyang literally wobbly egg bread. Its a local favourite made with buttered toast topped with soft-boiled eggs a bit of soy sauce and pepper. The bread was slightly sweet which went really well with the creamy yolks. It reminded me a bit of the English breakfast classic coddled egg but with a Malaysian twist. Simple comforting and delicious. What should I eat for lunch #Ipoh #MalaysiaFood #RotiTelurGoyang #Breakfast #FoodAdventure"

"I am now staying in Ipoh a heritage-rich town in Malaysia that makes a perfect stopover for anyone travelling by train. The old town is compact and walkable filled with colonial buildings vintage cafs street art tucked down alleyways and a few small heritage centres and galleries. If youre like me and enjoy wandering around with no fixed plan this illustrated map is a great place to start. Ill drop the link to download the full version in the next tweet. πŸ‘‡ Lots to see and plenty to eat more photos coming soon as I explore. #Ipoh #IpohOldTown #RailTourism #AsianTrainGuide #TrainTravel"

"Lunch today in Ipoh was Nasi Kandar Ayam Goreng. This is one of Malaysias most famous dishes originally from Penang. The name nasi kandar means rice carried on a pole. A throwback to when Indian Muslim hawkers used to carry containers of rice and curry balanced on a pole across their shoulders. The version I had came with spiced fried chicken a boiled egg bean sprouts in curry sauce and fresh cucumber on the side. The flavours were rich and full of spice perfectly balanced with a glass of iced milk tea. It reminded me a bit of khao rad kaeng in Thailand rice with curry and side dishes but the"

"While walking around Yala I came across the Bird City Street Art project in the old town. The walls are covered with murals showing birds and other imaginative figures. Its about a ten-minute walk from Yala Railway Station. The project was created to bring new life to the community and promote cultural understanding in the area. The artwork gives the old buildings a fresh look and makes the neighbourhood more welcoming to visitors. I think having street art like this is a great way to promote local tourism and to encourage more people to visit. I wish more cities would do this. If you plan to"

"πŸš‚ Good morning from Hat Yai. My short holiday in Thailand is coming to an end. Im about to board the #MySawasdee international express for my trip back to Kuala Lumpur where I started on Friday night. We had two nights and two full days here in Hat Yai. From KL I will continue south to the boarder with Singapore where I will board a sleeper train to head up the East Coast line to Tumpat on the border with Thailand. I will cross back over into Thailand (again) on Wednesday. This time I will use the border checkpoint at Sungai Kolok. I shot a video tour of this train this morning before"
