"Congrats to Mara Corina Machado who is in hiding but today won the Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous efforts to bring democracy to Venezuela. Much deserved prize"

"The Trump administration may be preparing to kick reporters out of the Pentagon for refusing to sign a press policy that is widely seen as violating First Amendment rights. This would be bad for the public and for reporters of course but I'd also note that it would hurt the Trump administration. Government officials do not give reporters access because they like us or worship transparency but because they think it's better (to paraphrase an annoyed LBJ) to have us inside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in. Barring reporters is something authoritarian governments do all the time --"

"Finally some thrilling and uplifting news from the Middle East and President Trump does deserve credit. Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees released. Food and other relief supplies released into Gaza. And good to see Trump emphasizing that this is the war's end -- hope he will not let Netanyahu start things up again down the road when there are inevitable disputes about the future of Hamas and about Israeli troop withdrawals"

"President Trump has dispatched federal troops to what he calls "war-ravaged Portland." Portland has its problems but it is not the "hell" Trump claims; it remains a food-and-wine heaven. "Hell" does not serve Pinot Noir this good. I suspect Trump is sending troops mainly to see if he can provoke violence to distract from his messes (Epstein files corruption tariffs economic softening) and justify his authoritarian rule"

"This is ludicrous. As Judge Immergut put it Trump on Portland is untethered from reality"

"The @washingtonpost reports on how the chaos around the closure of USAID led to breakdowns in supply lines resulting in kids dying of malaria: @SecRubio says US aid cuts haven't killed anyone; in fact they kill kids at a rate estimated at XX per hour"

"Hmm. I'm having second thoughts about my column today. I'd called on President Trump to skip sending troops to Portland and just join the city's naked bike ride. But in consideration of the human rights of Portlanders a naked Trump may be too much"

"Kind of fascinating how Trump supporters around the country think they know what is happening in "war-ravaged" Portland. As the Trump-appointed judge said Trump's view is "untethered" from reality. Folks come to Portland and see for yourself"

"Pres. Trump presents Portland as a "war-ravaged" "hell" that must be crushed by armed troops but it's actually a city that protests his plan with a naked bike ride -- that's the kind of "war zone" this is. So I call on Trump to join the naked bike ride:"

"My video report from the perilous front lines of what President Trump described as war-ravaged Portland a city on fire requiring troops to come save us"

"The small Oregon town of Lebanon was built on the timber industry and consequently has struggled over the last XX years along with the industry. Its high school stadium built in the 1950s is no longer usable and the community can't afford a new one. So it is hoping to get enough votes from the public to win a T. Mobile $X million award to help build that stadium. I've generally been on the environmentalist side of the timber wars but I also thought that our victorious side didn't do nearly enough to support loggers and timber communities that lost jobs and hope. Here's a chance to redeem"

"Why is President Trump targeting Portland Likely because he watched a misleading Fox News report that included video of 2020 riots and presented it as happening now. We asked our intrepid photographer to brave the war zone and here's what he captured:"

"Powerful reporting by @KristenGelineau for @AP about how even as @SecRubio says no one is dying because of USAID cuts children are dying from USAID cuts"

"One reason we tolerate the evisceration of USAID is skepticism about aid's effectiveness. Yet aid can and does save lives. As @BillGates notes here child deaths from diarrhea have fallen XX% since 2000. Diarrhea still kills too many children but we know to solve these problems inexpensively. We have the tools we have the resources but what's uncertain is whether we have the will. I recommend Bill's essay about saving lives of kids with diarrhea:"

"It's utterly disingenuous when Hegseth says that the new Pentagon crackdown is about protecting classified information. It's about protecting Hegseth. Remember that it was Hegseth himself who sent advance information about a Yemen bombing to his wife brother and personal lawyer in a Signal chat. That's just the kind of scandal involving mishandling of classified information that reporters should be uncovering and reporting on. But the new Pentagon policy would bar them from inquiring about it. So we have someone with a record of mishandling secret information taking steps to protect himself"

"I've been reporting in East Africa on the impact of President Trump's USAID cuts and I find that not only are children dying in large numbers but the pace is accelerating as stockpiles run out and people grow weaker. I also obtained an internal Trump administration memo stating that the cost of shutting down USAID is $XXX billion over two years. That sum could save more than X million children's lives; instead it is being spent to to shut down programs that save lives. Help spread the word"
