"I'm against the "UN Sustainable Development" program since it would not support loans to third world countries to build fossil fuel generation which is the cheapest quickest option for baseload. Classic white liberal 1st world arrogance: you can have solar panels to charge your iphones but no baseload for industrial development" @BubSluggo on X 2025-07-24 03:08:20 UTC XXX followers, XXX engagements

"@Samuitokoro1 @alan_poirier "so they've basically got double the peak output now for a couple hours at least." But not in winter when they really need it. They probably have a 2nd smaller diesel generator for that instance in any case. Solar power at a latitude of +62 is about as stupid as it gets" @BubSluggo on X 2025-07-23 20:51:36 UTC XXX followers, XX engagements
""11% capacity factor." I think a little less. You can reverse engineer the capacity factor knowing the amount of diesel it allegedly saves a year the rated output of the solar farm and the efficiency of a large diesel genset. I get between X and XX% capacity factor. We know the capacity factor of the solar farm near Edmonton at 54N between Nov.15 and Feb.15 is only X% so my guess is for the midwinter X months the capacity factor is maybe 1%" @BubSluggo on X 2025-07-23 21:49:13 UTC XXX followers, XX engagements
"They're not going "off diesel" in any meaningful interpretation of the phrase. And the payback How about never. The batteries and panels will have to be replaced long before they recover the cost of the installation through diesel purchase savings. The cost is $15.5M and they alleged save 350K litres/year or about $0.5M per year. Theoretically the payback is then XX years but the batteries might only last XX years and the panels XX i.e. it never pays for itself. It's only being done because southern taxpayers are footing the bill. Keep in mind these projects typically go ahead with" @BubSluggo on X 2025-07-23 15:25:17 UTC XXX followers, XXX engagements
