@zebassembly "I'm not sure all things being equal CF should inherently have higher latency since we are physically further away. I tried to test latency while disabling the Vercel firewall which didn't tell much my assumption is that the latency is either in their DDOS prevention or it's some overhead introduced by the in-function concurrency that power their fluid compute product"

"I spent much of last week helping investigate performance issues and running benchmarks from an EC2 VM and it was an incredibly fun experience. The team behind the Workers runtime is world class. One of my favorite parts about this is when we noticed an issue impacting Vercel and making us look better than we should have been. Despite the fact it'd make it harder for us to win the benchmarks an engineer said "a bug is a bug and we fix bugs" and now we've submitted a PR to Node to give customers on Vercel (and anyone using node in general) some nice perf gains"

"When writing RFCs or SPECs has anyone found a workflow using an LLM that makes it easier to get to that first draft I procrastinate the hell out of writing that first draft but then I'm fairly good at taking it from there. I've started ranting into my phone's recorder app while walking the dog and then letting Claude generate a first pass based on my ramblings and the results are fine but I feel like there's probably a change I can make to this workflow to make it much better without a ton of additional effort"

"As for pricing I created a Vercel account and a new Cloudflare account to run these benchmarks. Once the billing period is over I'll post the bills I get from each I'm certain that CF will be cheaper but I want to give y'all accurate numbers"

"Other observations I made that I thought were interesting this week: X. React is slow There's so many weird tricks done in React that hurt performance (and the Workers runtime in particular). We're going to fix this both in our runtime and in React itself but that wasn't gonna make it in time for this blog. When our runtime team (who are hardened C++/Rust engineers) learned about what React under the hood their reactions were full or horror and hilarious. X. Cloudflare has locations everywhere and I know we're fast but seeing that we often have a lower request latency than Vercel when testing"

"We (I'm a Cloudflare employee that works on the Workers product) did care It's just that the benchmarks that showed this performance gap aren't representative of how people use our platform so we weren't optimizing for this set of performance characteristics. This is more prioritizing optimizing for the average user than not caring about the occasional user who has a weird usage pattern. Most compute on us is heavily IO bound or has occasional CPU-heacy work this benchmark where we're hammering your Worker with many concurrent 200ms+ CPU tasks is not something that happens often so it hasn't"

"Separately this test was not representative of what your full-stack app should ever look like. Both Cloudflare and Vercel are plenty fast enough at rendering full-stack apps. If you ever have a page taking 500ms to render on any provider it is time to fix your code"

"One of my favorite parts of Cloudflare is the eagerness to swarm on difficult problems even if they aren't directly responsible for the problem"
