The letter is controversial because two saints defended him (Maximus the Confessor and Pope Agatho). "This protestant notion that the early church rejected ceremony and beauty is ridiculous. Yes when Jesus and his apostles served as missionaries they went on the road. But Catholics send missionaries out with very little as well. Once things are established we then build for beauty. Remember Jesus allowed perfume worth a year's wages to be poured on his feet to honor him. God commanded the Temple and all its glory in the Old Covenant.
