"@EndlessPlaid This has absolutely nothing to do with funding mars mind you. If they wanted to they could dedicate that budget right now from Musk's pockets"

"@piolet1549 It doesn't. I'm referring more to the fact that it diverts large amounts of resources away from what can actually be considered the 'vision' (ie starship LV & mars efforts)"

"SpaceX going public to pump money into AI & in-space datacenters. Pivoting the entire fate of SpaceX on an extreme chance to fuel a risky venture completely separate from the actual vision of the company.Such a ridiculously stupid move if they actually go through with it"

"Would recommend reading the article. Fitting custom-built spacecraft on a V3 starlink bus to act as datacenters. Utilizing the existing Starlink constellation so they're built in tandem. And the brief mention of moonshot shit. There's a clear short and long-term plan here. Problem is it still relies on Starship to do it's job. Which presently it is not and has been delayed years from when it was reasonably expected to (V2 starlinks set to launch as soon as 2022.took so long that they made an alternative version to launch on F9 and made a new V3 satellite instead for the future which is also"

"@spacepotat0Z @xdNiBoR That is why I think this is horrendous because it sounds like that is exactly what is about to happen"

"Not strictly but yes. Full operational batch of real as intended starlink V3's deployed in their operational orbits with more scheduled for the future yes then we're tentatively good You also highlight the exact issue here. You can't just say next year forever. The goalposts are already delayed so much as is I fear they'll push it to "operational" status before it's really ready in order to compensate for the delays which would otherwise not be a thing that would have a likely chance of happening if they remained private and had less of a drive to appeal to investors"

"& even on that note this would be an entirely nonissue if they just fully split off Starlink as a company and then made that public. That would actually work well. But it doesn't have enough capital compared to spx obviously which is why they've made this choice. But making Starlink alone public would do much less harm to both"

"Unfortunately most of the actual work I had done on that is now lost due to an older harddrive failure (which is why I stopped). Process itself involved mostly just tracking engines via their unique nozzle patterns. At that time the viewing complex by XXX was still open to the public so we'd get photos from someone almost every time a booster was transported. Engines themselves have very very very small SNs printed right below the booties so you typically don't see them. So most engines tracked I couldn't assign a number to. But tracking them by the unique wear/depostion patterns inside the"

"@__morse @EndlessPlaid I do. And this is not helping it along. Colonizing mars is later anyway. Getting there in the first place is the focus for now. This effort does not help either of the two"

"@luke_leisher_ @MatthewTortora_ @xdNiBoR I think that you have missed the point here that there's no telling if such catastrophes can happen again on a whim. Which is why going IPO before the damn thing is even operational is horrendous due to the higher risks of such occurring"

"I feel like there's a very simple way to define it Working in space. Very little to no nuance.includes X-15 pilots and suborbital craft like Mercury.includes spaceship1/2 pilots but not their passengers.includes polaris includes FRAM includes axiom and obviously includes other actual missions. Does not include New Shepard ss2 passengers and tourists on dragon who are solely there for the experience etc"

"@MatthewTortora_ @xdNiBoR Starlink was introduced at a time where they had an abundance of resources and time. That is not exactly as much of the case anymore in relation to Starship efforts"

"Operational is launching and deploying items of actual use. Not data only. Typically can be defined by when commercial payloads are allowed to fly but that may not entirely be the case for Starship. But otherwise like you know literally anything but deploying steel slugs and ditching it on suborbital trajectories"

"I am not sure what kind of figures you would be asking for here. Compare the state of the company in of 2017 and today. Wildly different on the resources front. Honestly as much as possible should (and is) be dedicated to getting the damn launch vehicle operational or otherwise launching V3 starlinks ASAP which the V3 sats themselves have also been experiencing their own share of issues but this is a hypothetical so just not counting that for now"

"@spacepotat0Z @SpacerFC @xdNiBoR The ones X years ago were V2 sats. Which they then compromised into V2 mini for falcon. And the design requirements continued to change so much for the Starship sat that it's now its own thing V3. Which is as I understand it right now a little bit of a clusterfuck"
