"The recent success of both OpenAIs language model and DeepMinds Gemini at the International Mathematical Olympiad is truly remarkable. The engineers have every reason to be proud of what they've accomplished. And AI will continue to improve when working with patterns it has seen (very) often and this will advance certain types of research. But it will still struggle in areas where training data is limited. I doubt AI could have discovered special relativity if it were trained only on knowledge available before 1900. Not because the concept is too difficult but because there simply wasn't"

"Recommendations for great math and science books for children and young (or old) adults Ill start: The Number Devil by Enzensberger Sparks curiosity for mathematics in children. Great to read aloud (terrible for getting them to sleep) Be ready for many many questions"

"Im not saying a modern LLM couldnt find SR even with limited modern input. I picked the example because I dont think its hard. But in 1900 there wouldnt have been enough relevant token to train it. And I think its premature to assume we have that input for all unsolved problems today"
