"@xiaowang1984 @Diplomatt42 I'm sure Covid impacted it also. But when OEMs go XX years with literally no growth they cut their manufacturing capacity their components and materials suppliers do the same and it takes time to ramp that back up"

"@k0busswart Yeah. You basically do replace most of the critical components every XX years or more frequently. And of course you have to refuel every 18-24 months"

"@xiaowang1984 There is no reason these utilities who have been granted monopolies and guaranteed rates of returns should be generating record profits while raising rates to record levels"

"Not bashing nuclear but people have the impression that nuclear reactors last 60-80 years with no maintenance. The reality is the guts of a nuclear plant will be nearly fully rebuilt 2-3 times in that time frame to replace major components: fuel assemblies control rods turbines generators cooling towers instrumentations etc. And has to go offline for 30-45 days every 18-24 months to take care of all this at a cost of $100M-$150M/yr for a 1GW reactor Again not a bash on nuclear. All power plants require maintenance. But the argument that solar panels and battery cells don't last 60-80 years"

"@ianboydsnr @fuzzysemi Because Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries are primarily used in stationary energy storage applications like this one not Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt because they are significantly cheaper. And it is what has been reported for this project"

"@PEnumberTwo You weren't the only one wrong about them. They somehow powered through to profitability with a pretty expensive technology. Now they are about to get volume - if they execute this could be a very big business and eat deeply into the gas turbine business"

"I'm not sure how it's location is relevant. We can do the same thing in many parts of the US. Solar panels have an expected XX year life and batteries depending on how they are used 10-20 years. And the life of these plants can be extended indefinitely by replacing failed solar panels and battery modules. Certainly much cheaper than the regular maintenance required on nuclear plants which are typically taken offline for a month every 1-2 years for refueling regular maintenance and parts replacements. You won't need to take a solar+battery plant offline for maintenance because it's highly"

"@xiaowang1984 I'm sure costs have gone up & the amount of work increased. We starting having load growth for the 1st time in over a decade timed w/pretty significant inflation both economy-wide and specific to the electric equipment sector as they didn't have the capacity for this growth"

"@fuzzysemi It already is the norm. The world installed 600GW of solar power & 200GWh of lithium ion batteries in XX. And thats not counting EV batteries. The supply chains for these are enormous and the materials are not rare - silicon lithium graphite glass aluminum copper silver"

"$5B to Bloom Energy for fuel cells for data centers. You know what solid-oxide fuels cells don't do well Or at all Ramp up and down. Data center loads do so that means you will likely want batteries alongside those fuel cells"

"Pet peeve - using the term rare earths to refer to any material used in renewable energy. Below is a list of the Rare Earth Elements. None are used in silicon-based solar or lithium-based batteries. Neodymium is used in wind turbines"

"Old news but I need to remind some people on here that you can now build a 1GW baseload solar + battery plant at about the same cost as a 1GW nuclear plant. And 5x faster. UAE launches worlds first 24/7 solar PV battery storage gigascale project"

"This project is being built now and will be up and running before we have a single new nuclear reactor built in the US. And in the future it will be substantially cheaper as the cost and performance of solar and batteries is still improving rapidly. Oh - you mean Abu Dhabi the city at the same latitude as the southern parts of Florida and Texas C'mon. Moving it a bit north into Texas and the desert southwest US isn't going to break the economics of this. These sites have trackers regardless"

"Idiotic move. We are entering an unprecedented trade war w/China. We are going to need to reshore everything from mining to mineral refining to heavy manufacturing. On top of datacenters. We will need all the power we can get. We need a bipartisan agreement to make it easier to build power plants"
