"This is not thinking ahead. These missiles are not in service because they were expensive and ultimately unnecessary despite the excellent performance. However next-gen UAS threats will incorporate capabilitirs features from them. We've already seen sUAS with computer vision assisted targeting and more recently ad-hoc swarming (Auterion). We should expect substantially higher top speeds maneuverability warhead effectiveness and collaboration/networking features"

"@David_Hambling @AndrewPerpetua Preparing for today's threats (or dismissing the ability to prepare for them) while ignoring what the next generation's performance will reach in response to upcoming countermeasures is unwise"

"@David_Hambling @AndrewPerpetua The modern FPV is neither untouchable nor the next-gen threat that will actually be difficult for even mature CUAS to engage. Prepare for that threat or die"
X Link 2026-02-10T15:02Z [----] followers, [--] engagements

"David nobody can afford to assume that no such counter will be deployed and that therefore the threat will remain more or less as it is today. The cost of being wrong would be astronomical. Take armor: FPVs today can be reasonably effective against armor but you can very much still use your armor. The threat hasn't evolved that much beyond FPVs because FPVs still work fine. If FPVs stop working quite as fine because of some countermeasure the threat will necessarily evolve to become more capable of defeating that countermeasure and astronomically more lethal against armor that was never"

"Certainly but there are better weapons for the job. Very cheap and proportionally high payload for caliber airburst ammunition for example. If you could fit as much filler as PGU-28A/B into an 18.5mm/12ga airburst round because your fuze was so much smaller than NGIS PABM. you'd have a drastically more potent CUAS option. Multiple orders of magnitude higher pk at shorter and longer ranges. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2021258465717453010 https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2021258465717453010"

"@David_Hambling @AndrewPerpetua This is coincidentally true of most weapons. Better ways to shoot things are still fundamentally just ways to shoot things. Still sUAS/loitering munitions are decently squishy targets"
X Link 2026-02-10T16:33Z [----] followers, [--] engagements

"@AndrewPerpetua @David_Hambling Yes. This also becomes a very interesting and difficult controls problem for infantry CUAS: you can't require an XM25-style loop of range adjust fire. You need to be able to point and start shooting"

There isn't a lot of space and even if the radars are very similar in interface and structure small changes cascade to larger ones. It's very hard to design something to fit into the same exact footprint as its predecessor unless there has been a disproportionately massive technological leap. "This is a good excuse to talk about dual use. Machine shops making parts for car engines and food industry devices can also make parts for autocannons and standoff bombs. Sheet metal forming factories can make the frame and outer shells for washing machines or loitering munition airframes. Foundries can make stadium bleachers or artillery mounts. The same goes for injection molding and every other manufacturing technique. If you follow me you probably already understand dual use but apparently many otherwise capable people don't. @rcbenker Ah yes wars are famously fought with microwaves and"

"This is very true. A system doesn't have to solve every problem as long as you need it anyway. You need an APS for modern ATGM type threats and it should degrade the performance of swarming drones (see: Auterion). Massed small drones are a reasonable threat to consider because they are an obvious and straightforward development of existing munitions. They haven't been used in combat because they are both relatively new and still unnecessary: FPVs still work decently against what armor is actually on the battlefield. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/2023335324823212498"

"Yes but Auterion has made such strides because ease of use for an ad hoc swarm is so high. Swarming can allow a single operator to direct a group even with fiber optic UAS. You just ad-hoc swarm around whoever is the lead UAS which is the one with a human pilot. The pilot can then hot swap as required or when the live one is destroyed without disrupting the group. A single drone isn't a problem. Ten at once are and are a realistic threat that will come as soon as ones and twos stop being adequately effective. The real power of sUAS is scale after all"

"The 20mm OICW round from ATK wasn't really poorly performing it was just hobbled by the size and complexity (and so cost) of the fuze which persisted in 25mm and will likely persist in the new 30mm weapons without a new approach. "Don't forget the other DFM: design for maintinence. Plenty of prestigious manufacturers with truly masterful engineers severely compromise ease of maintenence in favor of easier manufacturing. This is fine in something like a toaster where user maintinence will be rare at most but in an armored vehicle it's a bit more of an issue. Image source: Combat-Camera-Europe (pzbrig15) on Flickr"

"It is possible that rotary wing aircraft will become largelt unmanned but it's important to keep in mind that small numbers of drone-slash-missile UAS will not be as effective at striking protected targets once hard kill defenses are actually deployed. The helicopter's ability to carry a large number of highly capable fires gives it enduring lethality even under those circumstances. Additionally the fires carried by a helicopter do not need to be as long range as a typical fixed wing drone in order to fire from standoff: consider an Apache flying 200km and firing off something similar to"

"Really cool technique but irrelevant to stealth. If you want sufficient resolution and sensitivity to detect an aircraft at useful ranges (not 'the AGM has already been dropped' ranges) you're not going to have the FOV to do this with a small number of cameras or be able to cover enough of the sky. The radar return from the incoming GBU-53/B might also tip you off that one or more F-35s are out there. Proving that @elonmusk 's theory that Stealth Fighters can be tracked with cheap cameras is correct by using a brand new technique that I made to detect asteroids by precisely tracking planes"
